Uckermark, Deutschland - Lars Neumann, a 50-year-old Cologne, has been confronted with the diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for three years. This incurable nerve disease not only brings physical challenges, but also changes life fundamentally. He mainly receives support from his 24-year-old daughter Marie, who is at his side in this difficult time.

After a separation, Lars was without a permanent residence and currently lives with his mother. For him, care or old-age homes are not an option because he wants to keep his independence. However, due to his low pension, he cannot afford a barrier -free apartment, which makes his Situation even more difficult.

The dream of your own garden shed

In recent years, Lars has temporarily lived with friends in Raakow, where he very much appreciated nature and the surrounding area. To be independent again, he plans to move to a garden shed. However, this is not barrier -free, and the difficulties began to convert, which started about a year ago. When the finances became tight, Marie turned to the public and started a call for donations. The reactions to this were consistently positive, and former Lars colleagues also offered their support.

Lars did an apprenticeship as a life coach after his retirement and, despite the challenges, finds his way around well in his new life. Marie hopes that the donation campaign will generate enough financial means to make the garden shed barrier -free.

The situation of Lars Neumann is not unique. The need for barrier -free living space is growing steadily. As a positive example of inclusive living, a new residential project in Berlin could serve, which was financed by Aktion Mensch and initially offers 28 residents with and without disabilities a new home.
