Life-saving information: Eberswalde fights against sepsis with 300 packages!
In the past few days, the Forßmann Clinic in Eberswalde has launched a remarkable initiative to raise awareness of the life-threatening disease sepsis. As part of the “Germany recognizes sepsis” campaign, over 300 information packages were put together, which are now being distributed to doctors’ practices and pharmacies in the Uckermark, Barnim and Märkisch Oderland regions. This campaign was carried out in just 30 minutes with the help of more than 20 dedicated volunteers who actively supported the good cause. Two packing lines were set up to make the process as efficient as possible, reports Nordkurier.
But what actually makes this campaign so important? The central message is: “Could it be sepsis?” The aim is to promote early detection of this dangerous disease, because sepsis, if not treated in a timely manner, can lead to serious consequences such as organ failure. Therefore the urgent advice: If you suspect something, call 112 immediately, because this is a matter of life and death.
A holistic approach to sepsis
The initiative is part of the nationwide campaign that was launched in 2021 by the Aktionsbündnis Patient Safety e.V. (APS). Together with partner organizations such as the Sepsis Foundation and the German Sepsis Aid, awareness of this disease is being raised. In February 2021, the APS began raising awareness among the population through targeted educational campaigns, as can be read on the APS website.
What is particularly interesting is that the campaign has been supported by the Federal Ministry of Health since July 2021. Prof. Karl Lauterbach took over the patronage and the campaign received a new, fresh design in 2023, which was adapted to the changing communication needs. The coronavirus pandemic has helped to recognize the importance of clear and effective communication.
Quality assurance in sepsis diagnosis
While education through information packages is important, the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) is working in parallel on a new quality assurance process that is intended to improve the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis in hospitals. From 2026 there will be quarterly feedback on relevant quality criteria in order to detect sepsis more quickly and treat it effectively, according to the G-BA's announcement.
The statistics are alarming: every year around 85,000 people die from sepsis in Germany. It is therefore crucial to better interpret the warning signs and risk factors of this disease. The G-BA will begin collecting data from January 2026, with data protection and data security measures ensuring that no conclusions can be drawn about individual patients.
These initiatives help bring the life-threatening disease sepsis into the public eye and better prepare the medical community for the challenges of dealing with sepsis.
