Marie fights for her father: barrier-free living despite ALS!

The challenges of life often place high demands on the individual, especially when serious illnesses come into play. Lars Neumann, a 50-year-old father from the Uckermark, has been confronted with the diagnosis of ALS for three years - an incurable and unpredictable nervous disease. This diagnosis fundamentally changed not only his everyday life, but also the life of his family. During this difficult time, his 24-year-old daughter Marie is at his side, doing everything she can to help her father. But financial resources are limited.

After a separation, Neumann did not have his own apartment and currently lives with his mother. The desire to remain independent and live in a barrier-free environment is great. “Nursing or retirement homes are out of the question for him,” reports nordkurier.de, “since he wants to remain independent.” A garden shed that he could move into would theoretically be a solution, but the necessary adjustments are far from complete. The renovation began about a year ago, but the costly structural changes require more financial support.

Call for donations for a better life

Marie Neumann has therefore started a call for donations on GoFundMe. This is intended to help finance the necessary adjustments to the garden shed so that her father can lead a dignified and self-determined life there. The response to the call was encouraging; Many of Lars Neumann's former colleagues have already expressed their willingness to help.

“I hope that the fundraising campaign will bring in enough money to make the garden shed barrier-free,” explains Marie, who does everything for her father’s well-being. The financial support would make it possible to make basic adjustments such as installing stair lifts or accessible bathrooms to make her father's everyday life easier.

Barrier-free living – an important initiative

The search for barrier-free living options is not only a high priority for Lars Neumann, but is also a social issue that is becoming increasingly important. An inclusive residential building was recently opened in Berlin, built on land bequeathed to Aktion Mensch by a Berliner. In this building, 28 residents with and without disabilities live under one roof, so that inclusion is actually lived in everyday life. Projects like this show how important barrier-free living space is – and how complex the challenges are. Aktion Mensch provides information about such initiatives and promotes the construction of barrier-free apartments.

Financial support for the renovation can also be applied for through various agencies. The Federal Ministry of Health lists numerous funding options such as subsidies from long-term care insurance or special programs for barrier-free construction that could make the conversion easier. These options should definitely be considered in order to enable a self-determined life.

For Lars Neumann, who completed training as a life coach after his retirement, it is important to continue to be active and at peace with himself. But without the necessary financial support, many doors remain closed to him. His daughter's commitment and the community's positive response are a ray of hope during this challenging time.
