St. Martin's Goose Market in Wernsdorf: Cheap prices despite bird flu!

In Wernsdorf, Saxony, a culinary highlight is being celebrated this weekend - the traditional goose market. Lorenz Eskildsen, Germany's leading goose keeper, gives the all-clear for all goose lovers. Despite the ongoing bird flu that continues to make headlines, visitors can buy fresh geese for the same price per kilo as last year, reports FAZ.

Eskildsen estimates the market situation to be stable, even if new cases of infection are reported every day. Around 25% of the geese slaughtered in Germany come from his farm - that's around 300,000 animals per year. Only on one farm in the Uckermark did around 15,000 geese have to be culled due to disease protection measures, which accounts for 5% of the annual volume. Despite this situation, Eskildsen does not see any serious supply bottlenecks. Many Germans like to use frozen geese from Hungary and Poland anyway, so the import quota for geese is an impressive 80%.

Price stability in the supermarket

Another interesting point: While the prices for German geese in supermarkets have remained stable, the prices for imported goods are almost twice as high. This price difference is due to previous outbreaks in the spring that affected the availability of chicks in the countries of origin. Despite these challenges, it is notable that imported geese are now cheaper, but no longer have such a large price difference compared to domestic products.

The culinary interest in the St. Martin's goose is unbroken, and this is also reflected in the demand for geese for the upcoming celebrations. People are hungry for tradition and a good feast, and there is something to be desired for the coming period - not just in Wernsdorf, but throughout Germany.
