New supermarket and hotel in Klink: tourism boost for the Müritz!
Exciting changes are coming to the Müritz community of Klink: A new supermarket is to be built to boost tourism and make the region even more attractive for holidaymakers. This 1,000 square meter food discounter is being built hand in hand with a new Müritz hotel, which is scheduled to welcome its first guests for Easter 2026. Mayor Thomas Beckmann (Electoral Association) expressed optimism about the impact of these developments on the local economy. By creating new jobs in the hotel and the expanded Müritz Clinic, he expects the number of residents in the community to increase.
What is particularly pleasing is the confirmation from Dr. Douglas Fernando, managing director of Berlin-based Avila Projektmanagement GmbH, regarding the hotel construction that will take place on the site of the former FDGB home. Only recently the project appeared to have stalled due to high construction costs, rising interest rates and the death of the architect. However, a realistic perspective is now emerging. The hotel with 215 rooms is finally set to become a reality after long delays.
New jetty and challenges for tourism
Another important aspect for tourism in Klink is the new jetty at the castle, which is scheduled for completion in July 2023. The old pier was closed in November 2023 due to dilapidation, causing some confusion in the community. The new pier will be equipped with a steel substructure and will cost the community around 520,000 euros. Mayor Beckmann points out how important this pier is for ship tourism and sees it as an opportunity for the local economy.
The spa tax for holidaymakers, however, is causing debate. Children aged six and over have to pay the full tourist tax, which is criticized by some parents. However, Mayor Beckmann, who refers to the Müritz-Rundum Partner concept, sees no need for action. In the high season, overnight guests pay a tourist tax of 2.00 euros, day guests pay 1.25 euros. The tax also includes the Müritz all-round ticket for bus connections between twin cities, which is intended to promote the mobility of holidaymakers.
Successful tourism record and challenges
A current example of tourism in the region shows encouraging figures. According to Tobias Woitendorf, head of the state tourism association, the 2024 summer balance was positive. Despite a trend toward short-term bookings, many hosts experienced higher levels of satisfaction, particularly thanks to a warm fall that increased demand for vacations. In total, around 33 million overnight stays are expected in the northeast in 2024, which will keep the region going strong again.
While the cornerstones of tourism in Klink are further strengthened by the new supermarket and hotel, the industry also faces challenges such as price increases and a labor shortage. Nevertheless, faith in the region remains strong, because loyal regular guests from East Germany and a slightly increasing proportion of international tourists offer hope for the future.
The developments in Klink are a signal that there is a lot going on here. It remains to be seen how the various projects will impact the local community and whether the intended goals can be achieved. The upcoming residents' meeting, which was well attended due to the current parking fee regulations, offers an additional platform for exchange between citizens and decision-makers.
