Online flirtation ends fatally – 69-year-old falls victim to blackmail!

A 69-year-old man from Uckermark reported to the police on June 29th after he was the victim of a frightening blackmail. The man was contacted via Facebook by an unknown woman who sent him intimate pictures. Excited by the attention and the virtual flirtation, he responded thoughtlessly and also sent back revealing shots of himself. But the supposed chat quickly developed into a nasty trap.

The stranger demanded a three-digit sum of money from the man and threatened to publish the pictures if he did not comply with this demand. This is not an isolated case, because as Nordkurier reports, the number of unreported cases of such incidents is constantly increasing.

Dangers on the Internet

It quickly becomes clear that such scams are not just isolated cases. According to information from Polizei-Beratungen, the perpetrators often get to know their victims via social networks or dating platforms. Attempts are often made to get victims to undress and perform sexual acts in front of the webcam. In these cases, the perpetrators often quickly redirect communication to video telephony in order to record the clear actions.

The demands that follow are often amounts of money or even cryptocurrencies. It can also happen that the perpetrators blackmail by continuing to demand nude photos. What is particularly perfidious is that victims from previous relationships or underage people who are manipulated through “grooming” are often affected. Such practices can be classified as sexual abuse.

The statistics and their meaning

Statistics show that sextortion is one of the top three threats on the Internet in Germany. A study by the Federal Office for Information Security shows that these methods are increasing from year to year. According to the LKA Hessen, the authorities have already registered corresponding incidents in the mid-three-digit range for 2022. At the end of 2023 and 2024, the number of cases was in the low three-digit range. However, there are no accurate nationwide statistics as these incidents are often included in general extortion statistics. Those affected should not be afraid to seek help and report it to the police.

Many of these unscrupulous perpetrators operate in organized gangs, often from abroad or use bots. A particularly feared aspect is so-called “revenge porn”, where ex-partners use their intimate past to put their former partners under pressure.

How can you protect yourself?

An important preventive measure is to have clear conversations about online safety and to get information from the German police. She recommends not sending intimate pictures or videos on social networks and not accepting friend requests from strangers. Personal data should also always be withheld. If you want to be on the safe side, you can tape your camera, while up-to-date operating and virus protection systems should be installed on the devices.

It is particularly important for parents to teach their children media skills and to talk regularly about the risks on the Internet. The exchange of experiences in schools and social networks is also essential to sensitize young people.

Clarifying and addressing these explosive issues is necessary in order to protect people at risk in a timely manner. The police investigation has already been initiated after the Uckermärker case and once again underlines how important it is to promote a sense of responsibility in the digital space.

Anyone who is affected or needs help can find support from advice centers such as the White Ring. It is crucial to cut off contact with the extortionists and not make any payments. This is the only way to minimize the risk of sextortion in the future.
