Pop star Frank Schöbel: Return to Groß Fredenwalde with nostalgia!
On October 31, 2025, the pop star Frank Schöbel will visit Groß Fredenwalde again after many years. He has fond memories here because the parents of his partner, Aurora Lacasa, had a property there. “I associate this time with relaxing hours in the in-laws’ garden,” reveals Schöbel, who also has positive memories of Prenzlau, where he recently celebrated his 80th birthday in the Uckerseehalle.
Despite various challenges for East performers, Schöbel remains highly popular in the pop world. “The radio stations don't play Eastern artists anymore, and that's a shame,” he complains, because the 82-year-old has long since proven that he is far from thinking about quitting. “I attribute my fitness to good genes and discipline,” he says, adding that he regularly plays soccer and goes to the gym.
A life for music
Schöbel originally wanted to become a meteorologist, but growing up in a musical family, he decided at the age of 20 to pursue a career as a singer. His second radio recording from 1964 quickly found its way into the GDR hit parade, which he later described as a “horrible number”. As one of the most successful solo artists in the GDR, Schöbel can look back on an impressive career in which he not only received numerous awards but also had his own radio show. The Christmas record “Christmas in Family”, which was recorded in his living room, is one of his most successful works.
Another milestone was his appearance on West Television in 1974, where he sang at the opening of the World Cup in Frankfurt's Waldstadion. Together with Chris Doerk, he formed a well-known couple in the GDR hit, but their marriage and stage partnership ended in 1974. Since 2008, the two have occasionally appeared together again, which always causes enthusiasm among fans.
Current plans and commitment
Even at the age of 82, Schöbel's hit career is anything but over. He is planning a Christmas tour that starts on November 27th in Löbau and ends shortly before Christmas in Rügen. “You don’t even notice that I’m 82 – I feel fit,” he emphasizes. On Christmas Eve he would like to go to Dresden to visit his daughter, which is a nice tradition for him. After his performances, he doesn't shy away from signing autographs and chatting with his fans before he relaxes and drives home.
Frank Schöbel's popularity remains unbroken. In today's world, when Eastern artists often receive less attention, his tireless commitment to music and his fans is admirable. “They wanted to make us disappear into obscurity,” says Schöbel, who continues to campaign for the visibility of artists from the eastern zone. Northern Courier provides exciting insights into his thoughts and latest developments.
With infectious optimism and unbroken energy, Frank Schöbel shows that the love of music is timeless and that even at the age of 82 he remains a real role model for many. MDR completes the picture of the artist who knows how to assert himself even in difficult times.
