Star Wars fan from Uckermark: Grandpa passes on Jedi secrets!

A passionate science fiction fan is causing a sensation in the Uckermark: Franz Roge, 74 years old, not only encourages his grandchildren to follow in the footsteps of Jedi knights, but also looks back on an eventful history. His interest in the “Star Wars” saga has accompanied him through the decades and today connects him with younger generations.

The “Nordkurier Sinfoniker” are planning a very special concert for November 2025 under the title “Star Wars – Off to Space”. This musical journey through the sound worlds of “Star Wars” and other sci-fi classics such as “E.T.” and “Star Trek” not only lifts the mood of the audience, but also reminds us of the experiences of Franz Roge, who in the 1980s sent his mother-in-law to the cinemas in the Federal Republic of Germany with a severely disabled person’s card in order to be able to see the latest “Star Wars” films in the GDR. For him, the first three episodes, which were created between 1977 and 1983, are equivalent to the subsequent episodes I to III from 1999 to 2005.

Of Jedi Knights and colorful costumes

The old gentleman not only has a good knack for the art of film, but also for crafting. He conjured up costumes from everyday materials for his children's carnival celebrations and also introduced his grandchildren to the secrets of crafts. Together they have already created rockets out of craft materials and launched them into the sky. Truly interstellar fun!

But Franz Roge is not just a fan of “Star Wars”. He also has a great fondness for the 1960 DEFA film The Silent Star, loosely based on the work of Stanisław Lem, a famous Polish science fiction author whose works have been translated into over 40 languages and sold over 30 million copies. His best-known novels include “Solaris” and “The Futurological Congress,” both of which, with their deep themes, have also been adapted into films. The interest in Lem's work and influence on the genre is impressive, and Roge sees the technical sophistication of the first generation of films as equal to today's productions.

Concerts and future horizons

Advance ticket sales for the “Nordkurier Sinfoniker” concerts have already begun and will take place on several dates in November 2023 in cities such as Parchim, Demmin, Pasewalk and Waren. Of particular note is a special concert for children on November 20th in Neubrandenburg, which will be accompanied by an exhibition of the best works of art from a drawing competition.

Franz Roge plans to appear at one of the concerts wearing a Star Wars T-shirt. His passion for science fiction lives on and is a living example of how art and imagination can connect generations. And so the stories of “Star Wars” and the experiences with his grandchildren will always remain part of his history.
