Premiere of Trace of the Stones”: A look into GDR history!
In the coming season, theater lovers can look forward to a special premiere: The Uckermärkische Bühnen Schwedt is bringing a premiere of the famous novel “Trace of the Stones” by Erik Neutsch on the stage. Originally published in 1964, this novel is one of the most read and printed books in the GDR, with a circulation of over 500,000 copies. It addresses the development of chemical production in the raw material-poor GDR and reflects the social contradictions and conflicts of the time.
The story takes place in the fictional Schkona chemical plant and revolves around the main character Hannes Balla, a carpenter who transforms from a self-interested craftsman into a class-conscious socialist. This development, which also describes the relationship with the engineer Katrin Klee and the idealistic SED party secretary Werner Horrath, is dedicated to collectivization and the constant conflict between ideal and reality. Another focus is on the issue of the shortage of skilled workers, which was exacerbated by war losses and migration to the West.
A look behind the scenes
The production, directed by André Nicke, will address questions about love, dreams, ideals, a sense of departure and resignation. The performance is accompanied by live GDR music, including by well-known artists such as the Puhdys and Manfred Krug. A special highlight will be the matinee on Sunday, September 21st, where the audience can get their first glimpse of the production. During this event, Nicke will introduce the piece while the main actors present musical samples.
An essential part of the project is also an accompanying exhibition that connects the plot of the piece with the recent history of the city of Schwedt/Oder and its listed cultural center. Acting director Tilo Esche will moderate the event, and entry to the matinee is free - a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested!
Cultural heritage and its challenges
“Trace of the Stones” was not only a literary work, but also a cultural phenomenon that raised social and political questions. The original film adaptation by Frank Beyer was banned from cinemas after just three days in 1965 and remained on the shelf for over two decades. It was not until 1989, in the last days of the GDR, that the film was allowed to be shown again. This history of censorship and the reproduction of ideals shows how complex cultural life was in the GDR and how strongly it was shaped by state regulations in GDR literature is recognizable.
With the premiere of “Trace of the Stones”, the Uckermärkische Bühnen are setting an example for the examination of their own history. At a time when many people are asking about the meaning of ideals and the reality of their implementation, the piece draws a link to today's society and encourages reflection on the past. Don't miss this unique theater experience!
