Forest fire danger increases: Fire brigade fights flames in the Uckermark
In recent days, the risk of forest fires has increased in Germany, especially in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The combination of extreme drought and hot temperatures led to several fires that required emergency services to respond quickly. On Wednesday, July 5, 2025, an area of 1.5 hectares burned near the Bürgerseeweg. Just two days later, on Friday evening, another fire occurred near the Havelberge campsite in Groß Quassow. Thick smoke was in the air and several fire departments, including Userin, Neustrelitz, Altstrelitz and Wesenberg, were deployed to put out the fire. According to Uckermark Kurier, the fire department was able to prevent the fire from spreading to the campsite, which was very fortunate.
But the burning danger was far from averted. On Friday morning at 6:33 a.m., the fire departments from Havelberg, Sandau and Nitzow were alerted to another fire near Müggenbusch. Here, the undergrowth burned over an area of around 100 square meters, which presented the emergency services with an urgent challenge. While Havelberg dispatched three vehicles, Nitzow aborted the journey. The operation, which is suspected to have been arson, lasted until shortly before 8 a.m. and is another example of the increasing risk of forest fires in the region, as Volksstimme reports.
Forest fire warning level and regulations
Forest fire warning level IV was declared due to the extreme drought, and Dieter Härtwig from the public order office appeals to the population to be vigilant. There have been several arson incidents near Müggenbusch in the past; between May 1, 2011 and July 23, 2013, there were a total of 17 fires there. Such experiences are alarming and illustrate the urgency of sensitizing citizens and winning them over to the issue of forest fire protection.
The latest statistics from the Umweltbundesamt show that a total of 1,059 forest fires were registered in Germany in 2023, which represents a decrease of half compared to 2022. The affected area was 1,240 hectares, which is above the long-term average. The risk of forest fires is particularly high in northeast Germany and Brandenburg, while around 192 hectares were affected in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This makes forest fires a serious problem that affects both people and nature.
Causes of forest fires and future prospects
The causes are diverse, with human activity playing a role in around 40% of cases. Arson and inappropriate behavior by forest visitors contribute significantly to forest fire statistics. Forecasts indicate that the risk of forest fires will continue to increase in the coming decades due to climate and weather changes. It is therefore important that both authorities and the population strengthen their preventive measures.
Given this situation, it is essential that we all have a good knack for taking responsibility and taking care of our forests. This is the only way we can protect valuable ecosystems and avoid future fire disasters. Let's stay vigilant together and take the necessary measures immediately in an emergency - nature will thank us.
