VSG Altglienicke is moving to Fürstenwalde: A new stadium dream!

VSG Altglienicke, an integral part of the Regionalliga Nordost for eight years now, has decided to move its home games to Fürstenwalde, Brandenburg. The move is necessary because their previous home in Berlin could not even provide 300 additional seats and a fence for the guest area. Managing director Marco Schröder is nevertheless optimistic about this realignment and hopes to get the fans in Fürstenwalde excited about football.

What got the ball rolling was the lack of progress with the building applications that were submitted seven years ago. “We are very dissatisfied with the processing time,” said Schröder. The district councilor Marco Brauchmann from the CDU has expressed the hope that construction work could begin next year, but this depends heavily on financing commitments. In Berlin there is currently an acute shortage of suitable sports facilities and a huge renovation backlog. The Senate has released 24 million euros for sports facility renovations, but the estimated need is over 400 million euros over the next four years.

The background to the move

The decision to relocate to Brandenburg does not come out of the blue. VSG Altglienicke has already used three different home venues in the last six years. The limits of the current venue, the HOWOGE Arena “Hans Zoschke” at SV Lichtenberg, are forcing the club to rethink. The move could quickly become a reality through discussions with the city of Fürstenwalde, which have been going on for several weeks. Here, FSV Union Fürstenwalde has a stadium that meets the regional league requirements and could provide space for the VSG.

Lichtenberg's President Michael Grunst expects the new regulation to impose additional burdens, but sees the current situation as a temporary solution for VSG Altglienicke, which would like to find its own home venue as quickly as possible. In recent games the club has recorded an average attendance of 599. The aim is to increase this number with the move to the new region.

The league and its challenges

In the Regionalliga Nordost, which has been the fourth highest football class in Germany for just ten seasons, 20 clubs are fighting for promotion and against relegation. The league has become more exciting thanks to the new newcomers Tasmania Berlin and FC Eilenburg. However, the challenge of operating a suitable venue as a club remains for many teams, as well as for Altglienicke, who now have to operate under new conditions.

In summary, it can be said that the VSG Altglienicke in Fürstenwalde is making a new start, while the sports facilities in Berlin continue to represent an unsolved problem. “We hope that we can return to Berlin by 2028 as soon as the construction work on our sports field is completed,” said Schröder optimistically. The club remains on the lookout for perspectives and new opportunities in the challenging Northeast Regional League. It will be exciting for the numerous fans to see how the VSG will perform in their new home.
