Forest fire in Gohrischheide: 250 hectares in flames, disaster declared!
There is currently a blazing fire in the German forest! The flames of the Gohrischheide, part of the Saalfelder Höhe, which is worth experiencing, have been active since Wednesday and are presenting the fire brigade with major challenges. Around 250 hectares are already affected, and like Deutschlandfunk reported, it is the largest forest fire in the Free State of Saxony in 33 years. The situation is alarming: a disaster has now been declared, which illustrates the seriousness of the situation.
Things are particularly critical between Großneundorf and Limbach. Local authorities are on high alert as the fires threaten to merge, making extinguishing efforts even more difficult. District Administrator Wolfram is optimistic that the fire can be kept under control, but the reports of the almost complete destruction of the Gohrischheide are worrying. The estimated land consumption corresponds to around a tenth of the city of Chemnitz.
Alarming firefighting
The firefighting tactics have since been adjusted. The fire is brought within set boundaries to deprive it of its food source. But the missions are dangerous: Due to decades of military use in the area, explosive ammunition residues must be expected, which put the security forces in additional danger. For this reason, extinguishing work in some areas is only possible from vehicles and at a safe distance. The MDR reported from a dynamic operational situation in Jacobsthal, where fire-fighting helicopters from the Bundeswehr and the police are also in use.
The inconsistent nature of the fire is particularly evident on State Road 89, where the fire brigade has to irrigate heavily to prevent anything worse from happening. But there are also bright spots: a circular sprinkler system protects the residential development in Jacobsthal and provides some relaxation. An unmanned firefighting robot from Brandenburg is also doing its part to fight the flames.
Climate change as a player
But why does it burn so badly? The causes often lie in the dry and hot periods, which are exacerbated by climate change. This is shown by the statistics that reported forest fires in Germany last year covering over 1,200 hectares. Climate change is seen as one of the main reasons for the increasing frequency of such devastating fires. And the numbers are also alarming worldwide: over 11.9 million hectares of forest area were lost to flames in 2023 are recorded as such.
However, nature will always regenerate itself, as Olaf Kaube, certified nature and landscape guide, knows from experience. He reports that the charred biomass acts like fertilizer and initiates the regeneration of the forest. Birch trees will return first, followed by pines and oaks. Nevertheless, the loss of many ancient giant trees and the possible consequences for wildlife are causing concern among local residents.
Oliver Linge from the Gröditz fire department also expresses his concerns about the areas affected and the welfare of the animals that may not have been able to escape the flames in time. While the firefighters continue tirelessly, the wish for rain remains unheard of, as only that could finally ease the situation.
The situation in Gohrischheide remains tense, and it looks like the fire will keep us busy for some time. The fire department won’t give up – and that’s a good thing!
