Germany thrilled: record number of Michelin stars revealed in 2025!

What's going on in Germany's gastronomic scene? A look at the current edition of the MICHELIN Guide 2025 reveals it: Germany has secured a place at the top culinary level with a record number of 341 restaurants with Michelin stars. The celebratory launch of the gourmet guide recently took place in Frankfurt am Main, where the country's best chefs gathered to accept their awards. Deutschlandfunk culture reports that a total of 12 restaurants received the highest honor of three stars, including the newly awarded top restaurants Haerlin in Hamburg and Tohru in the Schreiberei in Munich.

The MICHELIN Guide has continually set standards throughout its long history, which dates back more than 100 years. It all started to motivate drivers to travel and to increase sales of tires belonging to the Michelin company. Today, the award of Michelin stars is a sign of quality that is recognized worldwide. It is particularly pleasing that the trend towards plant-based cuisine and the use of regional and seasonal products is progressing in Germany.

Star distribution and new awards

Overall, the new MICHELIN Guide awarded the following stars:

  • 12 Restaurants mit 3 Sternen (2 neu)
  • 47 Restaurants mit 2 Sternen (5 neu)
  • 282 Restaurants mit 1 Stern (30 neu)

In addition, 80 Green Stars were awarded for sustainable gastronomy, 14 of which are newcomers. Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guide, praised the high quality and creativity of German cuisine. A conscious and sustainable diet is increasingly being promoted, which not only inspires connoisseurs but also environmental lovers.

Special awards

The presentation of special awards underlines the industry's commitment to the highest quality. The following MICHELIN Special Awards were presented this year:

  • Service Award: Daniela Oos (Wein- und Tafelhaus, Trittenheim)
  • Young Chef Award: Luis Hendricks (Pietsch, Wernigerode)
  • Mentor Chef Award: Claus-Peter Lumpp (Restaurant Bareiss, Baiersbronn)
  • Sommelier Award: Marie-Helen Krebs (IKIGAI, Krün)
  • Cocktail Award: Michele Heinrich (YALDY, Frankfurt am Main)

In addition, 15 restaurants are pleased to have been recognized as Bib Gourmand. This means there are already a total of 156 of these restaurants in Germany that offer good food at fair prices. Day ticket took a close look at the developments.

However, NRW has suffered a small setback - the number of star restaurants has decreased, with only four new additions. A further look at the distribution shows that in Germany there are 12 restaurants in Schleswig-Holstein, 22 in Berlin, 73 in Baden-Württemberg and 46 in North Rhine-Westphalia that have been awarded Michelin stars.

The culinary look forward

The new edition of the MICHELIN Guide Germany 2025 will be available from July 24th for 29.95 euros in Germany and 30.80 euros in Austria. More than 1,240 restaurants are recommended on 480 pages, and the anticipation in the catering industry is already noticeable. With a constantly growing number of starred restaurants, it is clear that good food is a central concern in German cuisine.
