Germany in the Olympic Vapor: Four cities hope for 2036 or 2040!
Berlin, Deutschland - Germany is planning an application for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044. The German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB) is responsible for the application, which was designed in a three -stage model, which concepts can be checked first and, if necessary, improved. The last time the 1972 Olympic Games took place in Munich. There are currently four cities or regions in the race: Berlin, Munich, Rhein-Ruhr and Hamburg. These have promised to find sustainable solutions for the discontinuation of the games, with the International Olympic Association (IOC) preferring the "one-village principle". This means that athletes should live in a central Olympic village, which benefits logistics and sustainability.
in Berlin are already available 90% of the necessary sports facilities, while in Rhein-Ruhr even 95% and 82% of the competition sites cover a radius of 7 km. Munich, on the other hand, is planning to renovate existing sports facilities. In addition, a new Olympic Stadium is to be built in Hamburg, which is also to be used for the HSV football club. The cost of the application is estimated at around 6 to 7 million euros, which is a central topic in view of the high costs for past games. The reforms in the IOC should help reduce these costs. Critics fear that the games could be too expensive and that weak people could burden.
regional cooperation and resistance
The application plans are supported and criticized regionally by different actors. For example, Berlin is planning an application together with Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, which was made clear during a presentation in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. The ruling mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, and the prime ministers of the surrounding federal states were present. The "Nolympia" initiative has already announced a referendum against the application, which illustrates the tensions in the city.
The supporters emphasize that many of the required sports facilities already exist, such as the Olympic Stadium, and that temporary facilities could be set up in various sights in Berlin. In addition, sports such as sailing and surfing could take place in Warnemünde and Kiel, while other venues such as Potsdam or Bad Saarow are considered.
state support and future prospects
The Federal Government has confirmed its support for German Olympic acquisition. In August 2024, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser and DOSB President Thomas Weikert signed a memorandum of Understanding in Paris, which provides for financial support of 6.95 million euros by 2027. In particular, the intention of playing the games in 2040 is particularly important
The DOSB general meeting has set itself the goal of making a final decision on the application by autumn 2026 at the latest. Until then, informal discussions with the IOC should be held in order to develop the application concept and to convince society of the added value of the Olympic Games. A concrete presentation of the application concept is planned for December 7th in Saarbrücken. The first steps and interest in the execution show that Germany is willing to present itself internationally in sports again, even if the way there could be characterized by resistance and challenges.
