On September 13, 2025, the German national basketball team experienced a memorable evening in the semifinals of FIBA EuroBasket 2025 against Finland. Despite initial difficulties, coach Alex Mumbru's team, who supervised the game from the second row, managed an impressive 98:86 victory and thus secured their place in the final.
Finland started strong and took an early lead of 4:11 in the 4th minute through Miro Little. But the Germans reacted quickly. Franz Wagner, who initially struggled with his throws and only scored on his fifth attempt, brought his team back into the game with a dunk to make it 11:16 in the 6th minute. Germany then turned up the heat: they took the lead with a 10-2 run and ended the first quarter with 30:26, their strongest start in this knockout round.
Defense strengthens Germany's game
In the second period, the German defense demonstrated its qualities and did not allow any points from Finland for more than three minutes. Germany's rebounding work was also notable, with eleven defensive rebounds in the entire first period. Dennis Schröder was particularly outstanding, setting a new EuroBasket record with seven assists in the first quarter. Wagner dominated the first two quarters and scored a total of 20 points. At halftime, Germany led 61:47.
The 2025 European Basketball Championship, which has been taking place in Latvia, Finland, Cyprus and Poland since August 27, 2025, has been a complete success for Germany so far. After five wins in the group phase and an exciting quarter-final win against Slovenia (99:91), the team was clearly the favorite as defending champions.
