Germany plans to purchase the US Typhon missile system: strengthen deterrence!
In Washington, Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius sent a significant signal by announcing the potential purchase of the US Typhon weapons system. This system, which can fire missiles with an impressive range of around 2,000 kilometers, is intended to close an existing gap in Germany's and Europe's defense capabilities. Pistorius emphasizes that this project is only about improving the deterrence capability, not about the active use of the systems. The minister also emphasized that this was the first visit to the USA since President Donald Trump took office, and that the discussions also covered the US stationing of medium-range missiles in Europe. According to Welt, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth noted the request positively.
The specific design of the Typhon system provides for land-based launch pads for various guided missiles. Pistorius has already made a request to the US and a decision to buy will be made as soon as approval is received from Washington. The stationing of US weapons in Germany is also under discussion, while Germany is working on developing its own systems. This shows a clear trend towards strengthening military capabilities in Europe, especially given the changing geopolitical landscape.
Coordinated steps in uncertain times
The talks between Germany and the USA also discussed a possible withdrawal of US troops from Europe. A coordinated approach was assured to ensure the security of all nations involved. Germany and the USA are also preparing to deliver two more Patriot air defense systems worth around two billion euros to Ukraine, a measure also financed by Germany, as Zeit reports.
These developments highlight the ongoing arms race in Europe. Historical perspectives such as that of the Hessian Peace and Conflict Research Foundation in its publication on the arms race illuminate the dynamic interactions that exist between the armament efforts of different states. Strengthening military strategies always has an impact on the geopolitical relationships between countries, which is why a common security strategy is becoming increasingly important. PRIF highlights the need to deal with threat perceptions in a differentiated manner and to develop a sustainable security policy.
