Germany and Romania: New armament plans to support Ukraine!

In Berlin today, Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Romanian President Nicusor Dan signed an important action plan. The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in defense production and deepen economic relations between Germany and Romania. A central element of the plan is to set up ammunition production in Romania to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia while increasing pressure on Moscow. In doing so, the two countries are sending a strong signal of solidarity in times of political uncertainty.

But cooperation is not limited to military issues. Economic relations between the two countries are expected to grow, particularly in the energy and industrial sectors. Increased cooperation in the areas of education, culture and media is also sought. This comprehensive cooperation could not only boost bilateral trade but also deepen cultural and social ties.

A look at the Republic of Moldova

Parallel to these developments in Berlin, attention is also being focused on the Republic of Moldova. From November 1, 2022, a new customs agreement between the EU and Moldova came into force, which is intended to significantly improve trade relations. This regulation comes about in the context of the Russian war against Ukraine and its impact on the region. The aim of the agreement is to intensify trade without neglecting high security standards. The EU, which handles the majority of trade with Moldova, plays a crucial role; it has a share of 52.2 percent of the country's total trade.

Another aspect of this customs agreement is the simplified customs procedures and priority treatment in customs clearance for both sides. This not only makes the flow of trade easier for companies from the EU and Moldova, but also makes it more cost-effective. Companies can also apply for Authorized Economic Operator status, which gives them discounts on security-related customs controls. This new handling comes as part of the Comprehensive Association Agreement, which has been provisionally applied since 2014 and offers profound trade benefits for Moldova.

History and outlook

The roots of the Association Agreement go back to 2010, when official negotiations began. The agreement entered into force on July 1, 2016, replacing the previous Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, which had been in force since 1998. Intensive cooperation and the goal of bringing Moldova closer to the EU are at the heart of this policy, especially in view of Anglo-Saxon efforts to minimize Russia's presence and influence in the region.

The developments in arms cooperation between Germany and Romania as well as the customs agreement between the EU and Moldova clearly show that Europe is striving to develop more stable trade relations and ensure regional security. In times like these, it is crucial that the audible voice of political leaders does not fall silent, but instead advocates for peace and cooperation.
