Germany and USA: Spring progress in Patriot systems for Ukraine!

Today, on July 14, 2025, there are exciting developments in Ukraine's air defense policy. Germany has received positive signals from the USA that indicate the upcoming delivery of patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry confirmed that negotiations on the implementation of the conditions to finance these systems are underway. The question is particularly important who takes over the costs and how it is financed, as 112.ua reports.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has now opened up for an official visit to Washington. There he is expected to meet Pentagon boss Pete Hegseth in order to discuss the support of Ukraine in the face of the continuing Russian aggression. Last but not least, Wolodymyr Selenskyj has already announced that Germany and Norway will finance three patriot systems together.

Patriot systems in focus

But what exactly makes patriot technology so important? According to a report by stern.de , the patriot system is considered one of the most advanced air defense systems in the United States, which has been in use since the 1980s. The Bundeswehr has been using these systems since 1989 and they are able to combat aircraft, rockets and even drones. A single patriot battery can monitor up to 50 destinations and combat five at the same time, with a range of up to 68 kilometers. In times like this, when Ukraine is faced with massive air raids, Selenskyj's demand for more support for air defense is absolutely understandable.

Although the exact number of patriot systems that are to be delivered is not yet determined, Germany is ready to finance two systems. The cost of a single patriot system amounts to around 350 million euros, and an additional 3.5 million euros per defense rocket is added. In the past few months, Germany has already delivered individual patriot systems and a large number of steering flight bodies to Ukraine, as the Kiel Institute for the World Economy states that the Ukraine has received a total of eight systems from its allies.

political and military alliances

Another interesting turn takes the situation by US President Donald Trump. He has announced that the USA will sell patriot weapons to the EU, which should subsequently be responsible for passing on to Ukraine. Trump thus makes a remarkable swivel in his previous policy, which rejected additional arms deliveries to Ukraine. According to the plan, the EU will cover the costs, not the United States, and in this way the Ukraine could possibly get to the required systems faster, such as Welt.de reported.

The conversations and decisions related to the support of Ukraine also includes that during the visit of Pistorius in Washington and the meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the course for closer military cooperation could be drawn. It becomes clear that the military and political alliances are of great importance in this crisis situation and that future decisions can significantly influence the fate of Ukraine.
