Germany and USA: Leaps of progress in Patriot systems for Ukraine!

Today, July 14, 2025, there are exciting developments in Ukraine's air defense policy. Germany has received positive signals from the USA indicating the imminent delivery of Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry confirmed that negotiations are underway to implement the conditions for financing these systems. Particularly important is the question of who will cover the costs and how they will be financed 112.ua reported.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius made an official visit to Washington today. There he is expected to meet with Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth to discuss support for Ukraine in the face of ongoing Russian aggression. Last but not least, Volodymyr Zelenskyj has already announced an agreement that Germany and Norway will jointly finance three Patriot systems.

Patriot systems in focus

But what exactly makes Patriot technology so important? According to a report by stern.de The Patriot system is considered one of the most advanced air defense systems in the USA, having been in use since the 1980s. The Bundeswehr has been using these systems since 1989 and they are capable of combating aircraft, missiles and even drones. A single Patriot battery can monitor up to 50 targets and engage five simultaneously, with a range of up to 68 kilometers. At times like these, when Ukraine is facing massive air strikes, Zelensky's call for more support for air defense is entirely understandable.

Although the exact number of Patriot systems to be delivered has not yet been determined, Germany is ready to finance two systems. The cost of a single Patriot system is around 350 million euros, plus an additional 3.5 million euros per defense missile. In recent months, Germany has already delivered individual Patriot systems and a large number of guided missiles to Ukraine, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, which states that Ukraine has received a total of eight systems from its allies.

Political and military alliances

The situation takes another interesting turn with US President Donald Trump. He has announced that the USA will sell Patriot weapons systems to the EU, which will then be responsible for transferring them to Ukraine. Trump is making a notable shift in his previous policy, which rejected additional arms deliveries to Ukraine. According to the plan, the EU will cover the costs, not the US, and in this way Ukraine could potentially get the systems it needs more quickly world.de reported.

The discussions and decisions surrounding support for Ukraine also include that the course for closer military cooperation could be set during Pistorius' visit to Washington and the meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. It becomes clear that the military and political alliances are of great importance in this crisis situation and that future decisions can significantly influence the fate of Ukraine.
