DFB women celebrate 2-1 win against Denmark – shocking VAR hammer!
An exciting evening for the DFB women in Basel! In the sold-out St. Jakob-Park they managed to prevail against Denmark with a 2-1 win. Despite the absence of their injured captain Giulia Gwinn, who had previously motivated the team, Janina Minge proved to be a solid support as the new leader. Around 34,165 spectators, including at least 17,000 passionate German fans, created a rousing atmosphere.
The game started less well for the German team, as Denmark took the lead in the 26th minute through Amalie Vangsgaard. The first half was clearly challenging for the German team, especially as they had to accept several setbacks due to VAR decisions. A supposed goal by Klara Bühl was disallowed for offside in the 18th minute, and a handball by Frederikke Thögersen did not lead to a penalty, but to a free kick shortly before half-time.
The turnaround in the second half
The turning point came in the second half. Sjoeke Nüsken showed strong nerves and equalized with a penalty in the 66th minute. The penalty was all the more important because Nüsken was ready to provide an assist for Gwinn - the activity she had wanted after the handball initially failed to materialize. As soon as the equalizer was scored, Lea Schüller also scored, scoring her 54th international goal and thus ushering in a 2-1 victory.
National coach Christian Wück, who has only been in office for a short time, praised the commitment and will of his players. He is convinced of the team's potential and sees it as a great honor to work with the women. The improvements he wants to implement during the tournament are aimed at ensuring that young talents in Germany get more playing time at a high level. This strategy was already evident in the last 2-0 win against Poland, which gave the team a good feeling for the upcoming group game.
On to the next challenge
Now there isn't much time to take a breather, because the next game against Sweden is scheduled for next Saturday, which will be broadcast live on ZDF. Wück and his players are aiming to advance as first in the group – an ambitious goal! Giulia Gwinn also plans to be there as moral support at the last preliminary round game and to continue cheering on the team. During a team photo, her teammates proudly held up their jerseys and wore wristbands with “GG7” written on them.
Despite the challenges, the DFB women have impressively shown that they are a strong team that is able to assert themselves and shine even without key players. Stay tuned, because the next games promise pure excitement!
