DFB women in focus: Can they fight for the European championship title?

From July 2, 2025, the European Women's Football Championship will be held in Switzerland. The anticipation for the tournament is already great, even if the DFB women are not considered the absolute top favorites. Nevertheless, there are numerous opportunities, as sportschau.de reports. The team under national coach Christian Wück recently drew attention with a convincing 6-0 win against Austria and 4-0 win against the Netherlands. DFB sports director Nia Künzer is aiming for the title and sees the team as one of the favorites.

Spain is considered the big favorite for the tournament, with a win probability of 15.7%, followed by Germany at just under 14% and France at 13.3%. Under the leadership of coach Montse Tomé, the Spanish team has significantly improved its strengths, especially in positional play and midfield control. However, there are also weaknesses, for example in the back areas behind the full-backs, which could allow dangerous counterattacks.

The group phase in detail

The tournament format includes a group stage followed by knockout rounds. In the first phase, 16 teams play in four groups, so the tension remains high from the start. The games start as follows:

  • 2. Juli: Island – Finnland (18.00 Uhr, Thun) / Schweiz – Norwegen (21.00 Uhr, Basel)
  • 3. Juli: Belgien – Italien (18.00 Uhr, Sion) / Spanien – Portugal (21.00 Uhr, Bern)
  • 4. Juli: Dänemark – Schweden (18.00 Uhr, Genf) / Deutschland – Polen (21.00 Uhr, St. Gallen)
  • 5. Juli: Wales – Niederlande (18.00 Uhr, Luzern) / Frankreich – England (21.00 Uhr, Zürich)
  • 6. Juli: Norwegen – Finnland (18.00 Uhr, Sion) / Schweiz – Island (21.00 Uhr, Bern)

The DFB women will face Poland in St. Gallen on July 4th and are hoping for a strong start to the tournament.

The path to the European Championship

The qualification was hard fought. A total of 55 UEFA national teams were in contention for the 16 starting places, with 51 teams tackling the qualifying tournament. Switzerland was chosen as host after beating out contenders including Poland and the Nordic countries. Particularly noteworthy: It is the 14th edition of the UEFA Women's Championship, and the tournament promises to increase sales figures - over 720,000 tickets were already available when ticket sales started on October 1, 2024.

Speaking of tickets: fans can look forward to exciting visitor activities. The official mascot “Maddli”, a possible St. Bernard puppy, has already been announced and will be included in the promotions for the tournament. In the medium term, Switzerland not only wants to see every single game sold out, but also wants to significantly raise the women's football profile in the country.

Overall, the women's European Championship is a large-scale event that is becoming increasingly important not only in terms of sport but also in society. One thing is certain: spectators can look forward to exciting games while the teams fight for the title. While German football fans cheer on the DFB women, a big spectacle will take place on the pitch that will keep the football world in suspense in the coming weeks. The first games are coming soon, the anticipation is already palpable.
