EU leaders demand action: Germany must speed up approvals!

In a recent letter, 19 heads of government of European countries, led by Chancellor Merz, called for the abolition of “superfluous, excessive or unbalanced regulations”. This initiative was seen as a strong signal that the pressure to act is growing in the European Union. Bavarian state newspaper reports that Ferber, a central player in this debate, sees the support of 19 of 27 heads of government as a positive sign.

Ferber emphasizes that now is the time for change and expects the heads of government in the Council not to insist on going it alone at national level. A central concern is the acceleration of planning and approval processes for infrastructure projects and investments. Germany is perceived as particularly slow when it comes to approval procedures.

Urge for innovation and willingness to take risks

In his appeal, Ferber also calls for a review of national product regulations that hinder the internal market. An example of this is the different recycling logos in France and Spain, which represent additional hurdles for companies. The International Monetary Fund has noted that such barriers in the single market essentially amount to a tariff of 45% on goods and 110% on services.

Ferber is also pushing to reduce energy costs in Europe and provide low-cost energy sources for electrification. He calls for an approach that is open to technology, especially when it comes to future technologies such as artificial intelligence. The current political regulations are seen as too restrictive and could stifle innovation, endangering Europe's competitiveness.
