EU Commission: Germany under high migration pressure – new asylum policy!

On November 11, 2025, the political discussions surrounding migration in the EU are more topical than ever. The EU Commission has announced that Germany will have the option not to accept any additional refugees from other EU countries next year. This is happening as part of a new solidarity mechanism that is intended to relieve the burden on countries that are particularly burdened. According to Tagesschau, Germany is under high migration pressure and is classified as one of the countries at risk, while countries such as Greece, Cyprus, Spain and Italy are also experiencing similar challenges.

The Federal Republic has already accepted a significant number of asylum seekers, which is why no additional solidarity contributions in the form of cash or benefits in kind are necessary. This reflects the increasing numbers of migrants arriving or needing to be rescued. Research shows that Greece and Cyprus are experiencing a disproportionate number of arrivals, while Spain and Italy are suffering from sea rescues. The EU Interior Commissioner Magnus Brunner emphasizes that illegal migration in Europe has been reduced by 35 percent, which is considered a success of the new asylum policy.

Solidarity between Member States

The aim of the solidarity mechanism is to keep refugees in the country of arrival and not to allow them to move on to Germany. It states that countries such as Greece and Italy should process accelerated asylum procedures at their external borders. This is an attempt to better control migration movements. Austria, Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia and Croatia can be fully or partially exempt from these solidarity obligations. The discussion about the solidarity pool among Member States is therefore essential to ensure a fairer distribution of migrants.

The migration strategy focuses on reforming the European asylum system, which is seen as crucial to addressing pressing challenges in the region. For many countries within the EU, the current opportunity is to set the course together in order to be able to respond to these challenges in a coherent manner.
