Arrests in Pakistan: Afghans are desperately waiting to enter Germany

A current situation in Pakistan is causing worried faces: almost 300 people who are waiting to leave the country for Germany have been arrested. Among them are former local Bundeswehr staff and other particularly vulnerable Afghans. In the last few days, 35 of these people have had to return to their homeland of Afghanistan. That reports Deutschlandfunk, which provides information about the worrying situation that has existed since the Taliban came to power in August 2021.

The German government is in high-level contact with the Pakistani leadership to clarify the situation of those arrested. At the same time, work is being done on return options for the Afghans who have already been deported. The “Kabul Airlift” initiative and the “Pro Asyl” organization have also spoken out and documented the difficult situation.

Waiting for the return

There are currently over 2,000 Afghans in Pakistan waiting to leave for Germany, but hope is dwindling. In May 2023, the federal government stopped the reception programs, which further complicated the situation of many people waiting. These arrests are part of a larger problem and urgent work continues to improve the situation.

There are many who are wondering what will happen with the return programs and whether the security situation in the region can soon be improved. Pressure is growing on the German authorities to support those affected and the public is demanding clear answers.

A call for safety

To protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun, long clothing and wide-brimmed hats should also be worn. And don't forget: Proper hydration plays a crucial role in these hot months.

Whether adventurous excursions or quietly waiting to return to Germany - the people in Pakistan and the entire team here in Cologne hope that the situation will be clarified quickly. At the same time, we should all take care of our health and that of those around us.
