Border controls: Poland wants to waive if Germany follows suit!

The topic of border controls between Germany and Poland is providing a breath of fresh air in the political discussion and could soon lead to a rethink. Today, July 5, 2025, checks by Polish police officers who are responding to increasing migration will take place at the German-Polish border in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. In May of this year, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt ordered controls to be increased and asylum seekers to be turned back at the border. But Poland's Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak is now opening up the possibility of an end to these controls: If Germany scales back its measures, Poland would also waive its border controls, reports Deutschlandfunk.

Siemoniak emphasizes that there is no reason for controls if Germany also stops them. Starting next week, Poland plans to introduce its own border controls as a direct response to German measures. The discussion unfolding here shows how closely the countries are interconnected when it comes to migration and security. According to the Time Siemoniak also informed the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, about the current developments and obtained his consent. This dynamic could fundamentally change the way both countries manage their borders.

Traffic jams as a result of German controls

German border controls have already led to an increase in traffic on the Polish side. There are now traffic jams caused by the controls. The Federal Ministry of the Interior in Germany is now examining solutions to avoid traffic jams on the German side, especially on Autobahn 12 in Brandenburg. The Prime Minister of Brandenburg, Dietmar Woidke, sees a need for more cooperation between the states and considers joint controls to be a sensible solution.

The structures of border controls are a sensitive topic. Since October 2023, federal police have been on duty as part of random checks to limit irregular migration. These measures have already attracted international attention and are being viewed critically by various political actors. As the ZDF reports, the discussion is taking place beyond the borders, as other European countries such as Austria and Denmark are also reacting to the German border controls, which have already existed in various forms since 2016.

A look at the future

The situation remains exciting: If cooperation between Germany and Poland moves towards a mutual waiver of controls, this could pave the way for a more open and perhaps more harmonious border policy. Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk still has concerns, sees the German plans as unacceptable and warns that the Schengen agreement is at risk. Whether these political fronts will dissolve or harden further remains to be seen. However, a good hand in this delicate matter would be beneficial for everyone involved.

Politicians will have to continue to keep an eye on developments in order to meet the challenges of migration while at the same time ensuring security at the borders. The next steps could be groundbreaking – both for Germany and for Poland.
