Hamburg starts second try: Olympic Games 2036 are possible!
On May 31, 2025, Hamburg officially announced its ambitions to organize the Olympic Games. Together with Schleswig-Holstein, the city joins the race for the German candidacy for the Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2036, 2040 or 2044. Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) handed over the application documents to the German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB), supported by Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) and Senator Andy Grote (SPD) in accordance with the information from Weser-Kurier .
This step marks the second attempt to organize Hamburg's Olympic Games. The first attempt failed in 2015 due to a narrow referendum in which the citizens voted against the plans for the games in 2024. Tschenscher emphasized that the new concept was adapted to the city to take into account the concerns of the citizens. 87 percent of the planned competition venues are already existing systems or temporarily usable construction projects.

Sport economist Wolfgang Maennig was optimistic about the opportunities for the application, in particular on the basis of the usage concept for temporary sports facilities. Tschenscher was confident and will include the citizens in the decision -making processes. According to SPIEGEL In 2026, it is still unclear whether the DOSB is considering an application for 2036, 2040 or 2044.
