German-Polish translation competition for the 100th birthday of Bereska!

It should be emphasized that participation in the competition is open to people who have so far not published literary translations. The closing date for the translations is July 15th, and the result will be announced on October 15 during the conference "Henryk Bereska - a man in between". The best submission is awarded with material prices and an invitation to the conference.

Cultural foundation and German-Polish relationships

The cultural foundation of the German displaced already in 2021 recognized the hundredth anniversary of the significant translator Karl Dedecius. She organized a specialist conference entitled "Understanding and understanding: German-Polish literature relationships in the 20th/21st centuries", which took place from September 8th to 10th in the Collegium Polonicum in Słubice.

This conference brought central themes to the German-Polish literature relationship and underlined the important role of Dedecius in these intercultural dialogues. The opening speech held Thomas Konhäuser, who highlighted Dedecius's merits for the communication between the two countries. In addition, various lectures were given, including new tendencies in the migration literature and the pragmatization of metaphors when translating.

In 2024, the services of the translators Lothar Quinkenstein and Urszula Poprawska with the Karl-Dedecius-Prize recognized. This price is awarded to Polish and German translators for their outstanding performance in the area of translation and is endowed with 10,000 euros each. The award ceremony will take place on May 24, 2024 in Darmstadt.

Quinkenstein translates Polish literature into German and, among other things, has translated works by Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk. Urszula Poprawska, which works for important publishers, translated from German into Polish. Their work supports the exchange between cultures and strengthens German-Polish relationships through literature.

The dynamic interaction between the individual efforts of translators and the institutional initiatives to promote cultural dialogue shows how lively and complex the German-Polish literary relationships are.
