Hessen is investing 158,000 euros in new democracy project projects!
Marburg, Deutschland - The Hessian science landscape faces significant progress in democracy research. Scientists from the University of Marburg are significantly involved in several new projects that are promoted by the state of Hesse to strengthen the democratic structures. As part of the program "Strengthening Hesse Democracy Research", financed by the Hessian Ministry of Science, the resilience of democracy against extremism and polarization is examined in particular. The University of Marburg is participating in four selected projects that receive a total of over 158,000 euros in the first year of funding.
The project "Democratic Conditions in Hesse" is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Isabelle Borucki, which aims to capture the political attitudes and value orientations of the population in Hesse. Other selected projects include "Competitive History (s)", which analyzes history revisionist trends in Germany, Argentina and Spain, as well as "gendering democratic resilience", which deals with gender issues in democracy research. Another project, "anti -Semitism and danger of democracy", aims to establish an interdisciplinary research network. These projects focus on important topics such as democratic cultures of remembrance, anti -Semitism and social cohesion in Hesse.
funding and network work
The "Hessian Science Networks" funding line provides a total of 230,000 euros for 2025 and 2026 to promote the networking of researchers. In addition, an amount of EUR 277,000 by 2027 is provided under the "Hessen Monitor" funding line for a comprehensive population survey on democracy and polarization. This illustrates the central role of democratic research, as is the highlighting of Science Minister Timon Gremmels. He emphasizes the need to scientifically validate existing projects and bring relevant actors together.
Another aspect of funding is the establishment of a professorship for democracy history in order to further intensify research in this area. Applications for participation in this funding measure are now possible, with external assessments for science -based decisions.
extension in democracy promotion
In addition to the projects of Hessian universities, the future publications of the Labor and Research Center for Democracy Promotion and Extremism prevention also contribute to the profound development and discussion of these topics. From 2025, a new series of publications will be introduced, which focuses on the pedagogical practice of democracy promotion. Various contributions are planned in specialist journals and anthologies. These publications are an important part of dealing with challenges such as extremist tendencies and social cohesion. The consistent examination of topics such as anti -Semitism and extremism as well as the promotion of inclusion and participation for people with disabilities are further social focus of the current funding measures. The project “Inclusive and barrier -free democracy” aims to increase the participation of people with disabilities in democratic processes.
