Heat wave brings up to 39 degrees: Beware of health risks!

The forecasts for the coming days are alarming: Germany is facing an intense heat wave with temperatures that could almost reach the 40 degree mark. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns urgently about the health risks associated with such high temperatures. Tagesschau.de reports, that the nation can expect temperatures above 35 degrees across the country on Wednesday, with up to 39 degrees possible in some regions.

But not only extreme heat is to be expected. Tropical nights with temperatures of over 20 degrees also cast their shadows. It is particularly important to be attentive in the south and west of Germany, including federal states such as Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and North Rhine-Westphalia, as the warnings are particularly urgent here. On Monday, warm winds will sweep across the country, while thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail threaten in the Black Forest and on the edge of the Alps.

Water scarcity and drought

In addition to the heat phenomena, there is another serious problem: the increasing water shortage. More and more cities are restricting water extraction from natural sources and asking the population to use the resource sparingly. T-Online reports that the Helmholtz Center's drought monitor shows a worrying development. Despite occasional rainfall, the map shows increasing amounts of red, indicating dry soil and a signal of ongoing drought conditions.

This drought problem is expected to continue to increase in the coming decades due to climate change. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) emphasizes that vulnerable groups, such as older people, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses, are particularly at risk. There is an urgent need for effective heat protection to mitigate health consequences and protect people.

Future preparations

In order to be prepared for the challenges of these extreme weather conditions, the RKI emphasizes the importance of well-organized heat protection. Various ministries and organizations are required to ensure effective monitoring and inform the population about risks in a timely manner. The DWD works closely with the Federal Ministry of Health and other institutions to provide comprehensive information and support.

Given the impending heat wave, it remains important to take care of your own health. The DWD recommends drinking enough fluids, avoiding physical exertion and going to cool places. In Brandenburg, too, the responsibility is placed on employers to guarantee heat protection measures in the workplace in order to ensure the safety of employees.

Finally, it should be noted that Germany is in a critical phase in which dealing with both temperatures and water consumption is extremely important. So please take care of yourself and those around you!
