Heat wave in Germany: 37 degrees ensure festival heat!
Summer is showing off its glowing side! Temperatures of up to 37 degrees are expected in Germany next weekend, which not only encourages sweating but can also have serious health consequences. So reported daily news that the German Weather Service (DWD) is forecasting highs between 25 and 33 degrees for Saturday. Things could get hot especially along the Rhine on Sunday when temperatures rise to 30 to 35 degrees.
Anyone traveling on the weekend should be careful! The recommendation is to stay in the shade between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., as the risk of sunburn is particularly high at these times. Even those celebrating at the “Southside” festival in Neuhausen ob Eck should not forget to drink enough fluids. The DWD recommends two and a half to three liters per day, preferably mineral water, herbal and fruit teas or diluted juices.
Health risks from heat
Even at moderate temperatures, well-being can be at risk, warns heatwarnings.de. The situation is particularly critical for chronically ill people, seniors and even the youngest members of society. The health risks associated with prolonged heat are often underestimated. In extreme cases, heat waves in Germany have already led to more than 15,600 additional deaths, such as this Federal Environment Agency reported.
A look into the past shows that in the last two decades there was an increased number of hot days and tropical nights, including in the summers of 2018 and 2019. The DWD defines a “hot day” as a day with temperatures above 30 °C, while “tropical nights” are nights with temperatures not below 20 °C. Urban areas are particularly affected, where temperatures rise even more dramatically due to the heat island effect.
Tips for heat protection
By the way, the next cold front is already ready on Sunday evening, which will bring thunderstorms and showers to the west and northwest of Germany. After that, at the beginning of the week the temperatures in the north and west fall below 25 degrees, while in the southeast half it remains warm, but no longer reaches the 30 degree mark.
The following applies to all pet owners: Please do not leave your pets in the car! Even short periods of time can lead to oxygen deprivation and circulatory problems. Heat stress is no small matter, and health should be a priority. Use the hot days wisely and take good care of yourself!
