High expectations of black and red: does trust return?
Thüringen, Deutschland - The political mood in Germany has brightened up again, as a current survey by the Opaschowski Institute for Future Research shows. Currently, 56 percent of Germans have great hopes for the new government of the Union and the SPD, which represents an increase of 4 percent compared to the traffic light coalition, which experienced similar trust four years ago. This data was collected between the 12th and 18th May 2025 of 1000 German -language persons aged 14 and over. Older citizens from the age of 50 in particular are optimistic: 60 percent support the black and red government, while only 53 percent of older voters had confidence in the traffic light coalition.
The survey results reflect considerable skepticism from East German respondents, of which only 50 percent have high hopes for the new government. However, this represents progress, since the consent of 11 percentage points is higher than when the traffic light coalition occurs. In contrast, younger voters between the ages of 14 and 29 are less optimistic: only 50 percent now have confidence in the new government compared to 57 percent that the previous coalition received positive.
background and changes
The former Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) justified the end of the traffic light government with a loss of responsibility and breach of trust. This assessment could reflect the increasing dissatisfaction of the citizens with the previous government. Horst Opaschowski, head of the institute, emphasizes that despite continuing global crises, a more optimistic view of the new government is growing. The title of the new coalition agreement "Responsibility for Germany" could also stand for this change.
In another context, political developments in Thuringia are also important. The current government coalition from the CDU, BSW and SPD in the Thuringian state parliament is observed there. An analysis of possible coalitions shows that the current coalition is under pressure because it has to do without a majority of at least 45 mandates. This uncertainty could also have an impact on the national political landscape and influence the trust of citizens in the various parties.
The importance of opinion research
The results of the survey illustrate how important opinion research is for political strategies and communication approaches in Germany. Similar to the keyword research in the digital marketing landscape, the analysis of survey data helps to understand the perspectives and needs of the population. Both in politics and marketing, it is crucial to identify relevant topics and their priorities and to communicate accordingly.
Due to the continuous review and adaptation of the political strategies, parties can better achieve their voters and gain their trust. In this way, opinion research not only becomes an instrument of political design, but also plays an essential role in the development of effective communication strategies for all areas of society.
