Carnival of Cultures 2025: A Festival of Diversity in Berlin!

Blücherplatz, Berlin, Deutschland - On June 8, 2025, Berlin celebrates the Carnival of Cultures, a multi -day event that not only stands for joie de vivre, but also sets a strong sign of diversity and cultural integration. This year, the carnival runs across Blucherplatz and beyond, with a varied program that includes music, theater and performances of around 830 artists. Visitors invite around 350 stands to discover handicrafts, inform themselves about cultures and enjoy culinary delights. The organizers expect more than a million visitors during the festivities. Tagesspiegel reports that the move in this year in Friedrichshain takes place on Frankfurter Allee and Karl-Marx-Allee.

The big move starts at 1:30 p.m. at the Frankfurter Allee and Proskauer Straße intersection. 68 groups take part, including 13, who are involved for the first time. Security is the top priority: 1500 police forces are in use to guarantee the smooth process. The area around the moving route has been cordoned off in large terms after crimes occurred on Friday evening. Berliner Zeitung reports of an incident of sexual violence and drug trafficking.

a festival for all

The Carnival of Cultures has its origins in 1996, initiated in response to xenophobic riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen. Since then, the festival has developed into a symbol of a free and pluralistic Berlin. The event should not only entertain, but also address political and social issues. The festival offers a stage for Berlin bands and a variety of musical styles, from Anatolian Jazz to Balkan beats. The integrative work of the participating groups reflects the cultural diversity of Berlin and moves around 4,000 carnival participants into the streets of the city every year. Karneval Berlin emphasizes the importance of the festival for the visibility of culturally active communities.

The Pentecost Sunday celebrations attracted around 650,000 people in 2022 who populated the streets of Kreuzberg in a festive atmosphere. The mood was excellent despite previous weather warnings, and the parade presented a colorful mix of costumes and music. The police had previously taken measures to ensure a safe environment by towing over 200 incorrectly parked vehicles and taking out the subway in certain areas.

This year's security concept has been adjusted: mobile guards, awareness teams and medical services are on site to provide support in critical situations. At the end of the moving route on Hermannplatz, there will be emotional moments when the groups applaud each other and celebrate the connection that the carnival of cultures creates across cultural borders.

Overall, the budget for the Carnival of Cultures in 2025 is around 2.5 million euros, with the Senate delivering 1.4 million euros. Whether at the children's carnival on Mariannplatz or during the large parade, the festival remains a free event and offers a room for people of all ages and cultural backgrounds to make their concerns publicly visible and to draw attention to cultural diversity.
