Climate lawsuit against Kretschmann: DUH calls for immediate measures!

Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland - The German Environmental Aid (DUH) has again sued the Green State Government of Baden-Württemberg. The reason for this is the inadequate progress in the implementation of the climate goals for 2030. This lawsuit was submitted to the Administrative Court after it became clear that the state government cannot achieve its goals. The DUH demands that the coalition implement effective climate protection measures until the state election in March 2026. Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) rejected an ultimatum of ten days to implement an immediate program for climate protection and argues that he does not want to react to complaints.

Kretschmann questioned the effectiveness of small -scale climate goals and emphasizes the need for a comprehensive transformation for the prosperity of Germany. But the criticism of the DUH, according to its managing director Jürgen Resch, is getting louder. Resch describes Kretschmann's attitude as a "AfD-related position" and demands more political pressure for climate protection. The already grown tensions between the Greens and the CDU, which have been arguing about the further procedure for climate protection for eight months, also contribute to the current situation. The CDU questions the claims of the target defects.

successful lawsuit and effects

The DUH was successful in 2022 with a lawsuit against the state of Baden-Württemberg and found that there was a violation of the Climate Protection Act. Based on this judgment, the country was convicted of adopting an integrated energy and climate protection concept. The Administrative Court had set a deadline for the country to present this concept until February 28, 2023. If this does not happen, enforcements threaten.

The necessary concept is intended to include measures that aim to reduce climate emissions by 65 percent by 2030. Among the required measures include a nationwide model test for the introduction of a speed simit on motorways and a binding CO2 limit for the state government's car fitting park from July 1, 2023.

Coal electricity and climate protection in Germany

Climate protection in Germany is a decisive topic, especially with the aim of getting out of the coal -firing power by 2038 at the latest. This project was supported by a national draft law that was ratified in January 2020. The associated structural change, which plays an important role for affected regions, is supported with financial means of up to 14 billion euros to facilitate the transition.

Despite the progress in German climate policy, the situation in Baden-Württemberg shows that implementation of effective measures remains a challenge. The problems symbolized by the increase in the number of cars in the country between 2011 and 2024 from 7 million to 8.6 million are still an unsolved obstacle to climate protection. Kretschmann recognizes progress in e-mobility, but emphasizes that the acceptance of consumers is decisive for these technologies.

Overall, Baden-Württemberg faces the challenge of not only formulating the climate goals, but also effectively implementing in order to create an environmentally friendly and sustainable future model. German environmental aid has given a crucial impulse to increase the pressure on the state government.
