Matthew Brennan stops Waerenskjold: Dramatic finale of the Germany Tour!

The last stage of the Germany Tour took place on August 24, 2025, and things got really cranky. The route ran over 163.7 kilometers from Halle (Saale) to Magdeburg and featured a single but fairly steep climb of 18 percent. But as befits young wild people, the professional cyclists did not allow themselves to be intimidated. Sören Waerenskjold, the overall winner of the Tour, was unfortunately unable to take his third stage win, while Matthew Brennan, supported by Wout van Aert, turned the luck of the race on his side and won the stage.

But it wasn't an easy route to the final: Brandon McNulty had jumped into the race as a soloist early on, but he was caught up again with 60 kilometers to go. In the last 30 kilometers the first attacks from breakaways appeared, while in the last five kilometers there was a violent crash in which Alexander Kristoff and Phil Bauhaus were involved, among others. Nevertheless, the winner of the stage, Brennan, spoke up even louder.

The winners of the Germany Tour

Matthew Brennan celebrated his big breakthrough with his stage win, which was the second of this tour. He crossed the finish line first, while Waerenskjold followed him in second, securing the overall classification, which gave him a ten-second advantage over Jhonatan Narvaez and 16 seconds over Riley Sheehan before the stage. In the sprint classification, overall leader Waerenskjold was eight points ahead of Brennan before the final section.
Other Tour winners include Enzo Leijnse, who took the mountain jersey by finishing second in the classification. Level on points with Vinzent Dorn, Leijnse was able to win the decisive points.

A look back

The Germany Tour has a complex history that dates back to 1911, when it began under the name “Across Germany”. After numerous changes and a long break, the tour was added back to the cycling calendar in 2018. The event has now established itself as the most important German stage race and has been held over five days since 2022. Although interest temporarily waned and the tour was discontinued in 2008, it has since enjoyed a new heyday, enlivened by the international cycling calendar. So far there have been 38 events with 37 different overall winners.

With this exciting finale, another exciting Germany tour comes to an end. The athletes have once again impressed us with their passion and fighting spirit and perhaps we will soon be there again when the best cyclists in the world fight their way through the landscape.
