53-year-old missing in Domjüchsee – major search operation started!
On Wednesday evening, August 13, 2025, a 53-year-old man went missing at Domjüchsee in Neustrelitz. The incident occurred around 4pm when the man went into the water but did not return. An acquaintance who was looking for him alerted the police at 5 p.m. after he couldn't find the man. As a result, the police, fire brigade, Youth Red Cross and DLRG launched an extensive search operation in which over 20 emergency services, including divers, were involved. A helicopter also helped with the search, but it had to be stopped as darkness fell on the same day NDR reported.
Search operations continued on Thursday, August 14th. Supported by additional police divers, the 27-hectare lake and its surroundings were thoroughly searched. André Rieckhoff from the DLRG expressed dissatisfaction with the situation because, despite an officially declared bathing ban, people kept going into the water and sometimes even left children unattended.
Important warnings
In view of the tragic events, the DLRG reminds people of the importance of bathing rules, especially in dangerous waters. Hundreds of people drown in Germany every year, often due to careless behavior or overconfidence, with 80% of drowning victims being men and more than half being over 50 years old Explosive reported.
To minimize the risk, both children and adults should adhere to the following rules:
- Nur baden, wenn man sich wohl fühlt; abkühlen und duschen vor dem Baden.
- Nicht mit vollem oder leerem Magen ins Wasser gehen.
- Der Umgang mit Kindern: Diese sollten niemals unbeaufsichtigt ins Wasser gelassen werden.
- Die eigene Schwimmkraft nicht überschätzen.
And what should you do if an incident does occur? Quick help is crucial, and the DLRG recommends always swimming at guarded swimming areas.
The search for the missing swimmer shows us how important it is to take water safety seriously in order to avoid such tragic incidents.
