Current water levels on the Baltic Sea: flood warning for MV!

While people in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are enjoying the last days of summer, the issue of flooding on the Baltic Sea coast remains a hot topic. In the last few weeks in particular, there have been several storm surges that have caused quite a stir. Today, August 29, 2025, we look at the current water levels in the most important measuring stations.

In Warnemünde, for example, the average water level is 507 cm. A look at the historical data shows that the highest flood level here was 770 cm on November 13, 1872, while the lowest water level was 332 cm on October 18, 1967, reports the Baltic Sea newspaper.

But what do the terms “mean low water” (MNW) and “mean high water” (MHW) actually mean? These describe the average water levels over a certain period of time. The MNW in Warnemünde is 407 cm, while the MHW is 617 cm and is therefore an important parameter for the affected areas.

Water levels at a glance

The water levels at different locations are also important. Current values show that the water level in Zingst is 530 cm, in Bodstedt it is 532 cm, and in Ralswiek it is 527 cm. Despite impending concerns, the water level in Börzow (124 cm) and Questin (90 cm) is worth mentioning, as these values are close to the average mean water level.

  • Zingst: 530 cm (Differenz zum Mittelwasser: 23 cm)
  • Bodstedt: 532 cm (Differenz: 22 cm)
  • Ralswiek: 527 cm (Differenz: 19 cm)
  • Börzow: 124 cm (Differenz: 9 cm)
  • Questin: 90 cm (Differenz: -23 cm)

Current figures from the meteorological team lead us to assure you that the flooding does not currently pose an acute threat. Nevertheless, the recent storm surges should not be underestimated: the damage from October last year amounted to 56 million euros, with the city of Sassnitz needing a financial cushion of 42 million euros to restore the tourist infrastructure and harbor protection systems.

Rules of conduct during floods

The responsible institutions, such as the federal government, states, districts, police and fire departments, have established clear warning mechanisms to inform the public about dangerous water levels. In the event of flooding, it is important to stay safe: electricity and gas should be turned off, personal valuables secured and supplies stocked up. You can rely on the sirens, sound trucks and social media to quickly get the information you need.

In summary, it can be said: Even if flooding is not new in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, it remains important for residents and travelers. A careful eye on the water levels and a cool head in the event of a crisis are the best companions for enjoying this summer without worries.
