Asylum seekers in MV: Dramatic decline in the first half of 2025
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Deutschland - The number of asylum seekers in Germany and especially in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (MV) show a clear decline in the first half of 2025. According to the N-TV, only 1,078 initial applications for asylum were recorded in MV from January to May, which is almost a halving compared to the previous year, because in 2024 there were 2,048 applications. This corresponds to a higher -level trend in Germany, where a total of 61,336 initial applications were registered, almost 50 percent less than in the previous year. This draws a change in the country's migration policy.
A look at the development of the past few years shows that around 6,200 migrants in MV placed asylum applications in 2023, and in 2024 there were still around 4,800. These figures can also be seen in the context of the war in Ukraine, although Ukrainian refugees are not contained in these statistics. In 2024 there were around 3,938 registered Ukrainian war refugees in 2024 who do not have to apply asylum for their special status.
Development of the countries of origin
An interesting observation are the countries of origin of asylum seekers. In the first half of 2025, Syria with 15,127 and Afghanistan were the most important countries of origin with 15,181 applications. The decline in the number of asylum seekers was already emerging last year, with a minus of 1,366 applications, which is almost a quarter. The Ministry spokeswoman for MV has confirmed the significant decline in asylum seekers and addressed the tense situation on the housing market for refugees.
The reasons for the decline are diverse: reforms in migration policy, tightened border controls and measures by Balkan states to contain irregular migration play an important role. A changed location in Syria also contributes to this. From 2015 to 2020 the maximum level of asylum seekers in MV was reached with around 23,000 applications, followed by a dramatic decline to just 1,700 in 2020.
political dimension and outlook
Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt sees a success of the migration turn in these developments. However, the former Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed criticism of the excessive border controls and warned about the functionality of the Schengen Agreement. Poland plans temporary controls on the border with Germany and fear that this could lead to large traffic jams in traffic, which is supported by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) both in Brandenburg and in Saxony.
While the federal government is trying to steer migration policy in a new direction, the debate about asylum procedures and the social effects of migration are not ignored. For example, surveys showed that the majority of the population demand a turn in migration policy; The AfD in particular benefits from this development, the survey values of which have increased steadily since summer 2023. In addition, municipalities are overloaded and ask for support in the admission of refugees.
The relevant statistics speak for themselves: In 2024 there were around 251,000 asylum applications in Germany - without the Ukrainian refugees - which corresponds to a decline of 29 percent compared to the previous year. With a general trend, these developments increase with a more critical look at migration and their social consequences, which can be observed throughout Europe. The future of asylum policy in Germany and the EU is still facing an exciting time in which creative solutions are required.
