Respiratory diseases in Thuringia: sick notes are increasing rapidly!

In Thuringia, sick notes due to respiratory diseases have increased since the end of August 2023. According to an analysis by the BARMER the rate rose from 130 to 241 sick notes per 10,000 employees in one month. Compared to the previous year, the current rate is lower, because at the end of September 2024 there were still 316 sick notes per 10,000 employees.

Robert Büssow, the regional manager of BARMER in Thuringia, emphasizes how important a strong immune system is. Sufficient sleep, avoiding stress and a diet rich in vitamins play an important role. In addition, regular and thorough hand washing is recommended to ensure protection against infection. “If you are sick, you should stay at home if possible,” says Büssow.

Overview of respiratory diseases

The analysis shows that “other respiratory infections” in particular, such as colds and runny noses, have increased significantly. The rate rose from 98 to 197 per 10,000 people entitled to sick pay. In contrast, absenteeism due to Corona and flu has remained relatively low - an average of five due to Covid-19 and three due to influenza per 10,000 eligible people. However, it remains unclear how the numbers will develop further, as experts assume that the number of unreported cases of flu and Covid-19 will be higher.

The regional differences are striking. In calendar week 39, the sick note rate in Thuringia was 241 per 10,000, while significantly lower rates of 149 and 162 per 10,000 were recorded in other federal states such as Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. In Hesse and Saarland, however, the rates were higher, at 258 and 267 per 10,000 employees, respectively.

A look at health

So far, the rate of sick leave due to Covid-19 has varied greatly across the country. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there are just four per 10,000, while Bremen and Schleswig-Holstein lead the way with 13 per 10,000. The influenza sick leave rate also varies greatly: it is between two in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and four in Saxony and Rhineland-Palatinate.

In summary, the current analysis by BARMER shows that despite the increase in respiratory diseases and a special focus on infection protection measures, illnesses caused by corona and flu are not the main cause of sick leave. A strong immune system and healthy lifestyle habits could further help minimize the risks.
