E-scooter chaos in Rostock: Politicians demand strict parking rules!
The use of e-scooters has increased significantly in Rostock in recent years, but this is creating new topics of conversation among citizens. The Left, Green and Volt factions are committed to establishing clear rules for parking small means of transport. The main focus is on improving traffic safety and accessibility. Christian Albrecht, chairman of the Left Party, emphasizes the importance of orderly use, as people with limited mobility and families with strollers are particularly affected. Therefore, a corresponding motion should be submitted in the upcoming citizens' meeting, which NDR has already discussed.
So what do we need to consider? The proposal stipulates that e-scooters are no longer allowed to be parked on sidewalks, at stops or on guide lanes for the blind. These measures could significantly improve safety in public spaces. In addition, the left-wing faction, together with the SPD and the Greens, is calling for a practical free-floating system. The providers should be held responsible to eliminate the grievances.
Clarity through new regulations
A system with expanded control options is the goal of the Rostock factions. The proposal also includes a concept for operating and no-parking zones, which is to be developed together with the e-scooter providers. Technical solutions such as geofencing, a digital technology for virtually demarcating areas, could help prevent improper parking. These solutions are also part of a broader approach to improving the quality of life in the city, as the German Association of Cities explained in its recent publication. Transport is a central factor for access in everyday life and promotes the “equivalence of living conditions” in Germany, as emphasized on Städtetag.
A prime example of the new mobility are the new e-scooters, which have been considered flexible alternatives since their introduction. Nevertheless, it is crucial that this mobility remains barrier-free and safe. That is why the Rostock parliamentary groups are also calling for the introduction of mandatory minimum widths for sidewalks of 1.80 meters and the possibility for the municipal security service to punish violations, which could even include warnings.
Overall, the topic of e-scooters will be discussed intensively in the coming weeks. The planned resolution by the citizens on July 23rd could therefore have a significant impact on the future of e-scooter use in Rostock by establishing clear rules and responsibilities. The focus here will not only be on safety, but also on promoting sustainable and inclusive mobility that benefits all citizens.
