EHEC outbreak in MV: 62 cases – the bacteria are that dangerous!
An EHEC outbreak is spreading in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which has now affected over 60 people. There are currently 62 known infections, including 13 people who are suffering from severe disease with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This alarming situation has been classified as serious by the authorities. The region has been recording an increasing number of illnesses since mid-August 2025, and vacationers from other federal states are also affected. NDR reports that the infections can cause mild to severe gastrointestinal distress and can lead to bloody diarrhea and kidney dysfunction.
EHEC, which stands for Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, is extremely contagious and can be transmitted through contact with feces from ruminants or contaminated food. Possible sources of infection include contaminated water, raw milk, but also raw sausage and undercooked meat. Particularly in children, the bacteria can take longer to excrete, which increases the risk of further spread. healthy.bund.de explains that these bacteria occur naturally in the intestines of ruminants, which do not become ill themselves but excrete the pathogens in their excrement.
Current status of infections
The authorities have taken precautionary measures in the run-up to the start of school on Monday. Schools were provided with information material on prevention and hygiene. At the same time, a new standardized questionnaire will be used to collect information on food and contact with animals. For travelers from other federal states, the situation remains tense due to possible holiday infections.
