Dangerous roads: 93 traffic deaths shock Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania!
In 2024, 93 people were killed in traffic accidents in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, making the state the region with the highest traffic deaths per capita. Loud NDR The main causes of these accidents are often driving too fast and distraction from smartphones. One reason why the number of accidents in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is so high is the structure of the road network: the many country roads offer an increased risk of accidents. Demographic factors are also crucial – young drivers under 25 and older road users aged 65 and over are particularly affected.
Young, novice drivers often do not have the necessary experience, while older drivers' perception and ability to react decrease. As a result, the age groups up to 25 years and over 65 years are well represented in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Dekra has already introduced measures such as mobility checks for older people to check their fitness to drive.
Statistics and developments
These alarming numbers are part of a larger picture. The traffic accident statistics for 2023 recorded 55,641 accidents in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, an increase of 4 percent compared to 2022. However, the total number of 57 fatal traffic accidents represents a historic low. Interior Minister Christian Pegel emphasizes how important the state police's prevention work is for reducing traffic deaths. These efforts have contributed to one fatality every six days, while 90 percent of accidents are limited to fender bender.
The most common accidents occur on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. What is particularly worrying is that 31 of the 57 fatalities in 2023 were car drivers, 10 of whom were not wearing seatbelts. In addition, 47 percent of traffic fatalities lost their lives in tree accidents, which underlines the danger of country roads compared to motorways.
Measures to improve road safety
In order to sustainably improve road safety, almost 12 million euros were invested in safety barriers along federal and state roads between 2017 and 2021. The second retrofit program is currently underway, which provides for 50 kilometers of guardrails for a total of 13 million euros by 2025. The new strategies also include a traffic safety concept that aims to achieve a 40 percent reduction in traffic deaths by 2030 compared to 2020, as well as promoting the safe use of Pedelecs and e-bikes.
The challenges surrounding bicycle and e-scooter accidents should not be underestimated either. In 2023, 1,547 cycling accidents were recorded, which corresponds to a decrease of 7.2 percent, while e-scooter accidents have increased significantly since 2021, with 105 cases. It turns out that a focused approach is necessary, especially when it comes to traffic education, in order to provide the youngest with practical training as early as the 4th grade.
Future transport policy will be supported by precise analyses. The Traffic accident statistics serves not only as a source of information, but also as a basis for legislation, traffic education and road construction. If we want to go one step further, we must have a good understanding of the structures of accident events and the dependencies between the factors.
