Happiness Atlas 2025: Kassel is the happiest city in Germany!

A current happiness atlas, created by the South German Class Lottery (SKL), shows how satisfied people in Germany are with their lives. According to the comprehensive survey, which involved almost 14,000 respondents, 48 percent of Germans say they are “highly satisfied”. Satisfaction was measured on a scale from 0 to 10, with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania standing out with the lowest rating and Hamburg taking the top spot among the federal states. Bavaria's citizens can also be happy because they came in second place. Baden-Württemberg appears to be averagely satisfied in the ranking, while Kassel is the happiest city in Germany and takes first place among the 40 largest cities.

In the following cities the ranking looks like this: Mannheim in 17th place, Stuttgart in 19th place and Freiburg in 21st place. This makes it clear that Kassel in particular is a popular place to live, while in northeastern Germany, especially in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, satisfaction apparently leaves a lot to be desired. These results could tempt some people to look for new ways to improve their own life satisfaction, especially when the comparison values are so informative. Schwäbische reports that ...

Settings and challenges

What might promote or inhibit these differences in life satisfaction? Social factors, professional opportunities and general quality of life play a crucial role in how people feel around them. Particularly in economically structurally weak regions, there may be a lack of positive incentives that lead to higher levels of satisfaction. Whether through better work opportunities or innovative leisure activities - everyone here seems to be developing their own strategy to achieve happiness in life.

But let's also take a look beyond the German borders. There are equally interesting lessons to be learned about the current political events surrounding Nancy Mace in the USA. Mace, who has been a member of Congress since 2021, has had an eye-catching political career in recent years. She did not shy away from highlighting current issues such as security in cyberspace through her draft laws and controversial statements on social issues. Their support for Trump's circles and their criticism of some measures show how heterogeneous political views can be, even within a party. Wikipedia provides information about Nancy Mace.

Social currents

The challenges facing politicians like Mace are diverse and help to influence the way many citizens live. Topics such as equality, transgender rights and the necessary support for pregnant women and families are of central importance in today's discussion. It's not just the legal framework that matters, but also the social climate that is shaped by such public debates.

The results of the Happiness Atlas and the political currents in the USA can encourage us to reflect: Every place has its own challenges and opportunities. We can only hope that the policies, whether here or there, also serve people's happiness and promote positive development. In any case, it will be exciting to see how the social climate in Germany and the USA will continue to develop.
