Big disappointment: groundbreaking ceremony for solar park in Anklam canceled!
A lot is currently happening in the municipality of Strittense near Anklam in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the controversial solar park planned for today, October 30, 2023, had to be canceled at short notice. The district has submitted a regulatory review procedure to the Greifswald Higher Administrative Court in order to have the legal validity of the city of Anklam's development plan checked. This reports NDR.
The cancellation of the groundbreaking ceremony not only comes as a surprise, but also has far-reaching consequences for the project, which already has a five-year history with numerous delays. An area of 300 hectares was originally planned for the solar park, which has now been reduced to around 140 hectares. The solar park is intended to achieve an annual electricity production of around 180 megawatts in order to supply a new industrial area in Anklam with energy.
Protests and lawsuits
The decision to cancel was made by the company Anumar, which is behind the project, and has already caused quite a stir in the town. Protests against the solar park had already been organized in the community, and city representatives and local mayor Dietmar Klaß were not informed about the cancellation in advance, which further fueled the unrest. How Northern Courier reported, the regulatory review procedure submitted also includes an expedited procedure to prevent enforcement measures.
Although a regulatory control procedure developed in this way is not commonplace, it is also not uncommon when it comes to large projects that encounter resistance. The uncertainty about the legality of the development plan runs like a red thread through the history of the solar park and makes the village community look to the future with fear. More information on the lawsuits and the legal situation is expected in the coming days, keeping the situation exciting.
