Hacker attack on police: level gives the all-clear – where is the protection?

In a worrying incident, police cell phones in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were the target of a hacker attack. However, Interior Minister Christian Pegel (SPD) gives the all-clear: According to him, no sensitive data was stolen. As ndr.de reports, the attack affects around 3,500 police cell phones, which can also be used privately. According to Level, the State Criminal Police Office has no evidence of a data leak.

Nevertheless, the situation remains delicate. The check of the affected smartphones for malware has begun instead of simply disposing of the devices. Level emphasizes that all IT servers that manage the smartphones should be replaced. This is done as a precautionary measure to ensure the security of police data.

Political controversy after the incident

Nevertheless, Pegel's presentation is strongly doubted by the opposition, especially the CDU. Ann-Christin von Allwörden, CDU MP, expresses considerable doubts about the minister's information and speaks of possible immense damage. In response, the CDU parliamentary group has requested a special meeting of the Interior Committee to clarify further questions. If it turns out that data was misplaced, the impact could be far-reaching, making the incident even more serious in the context of current cyber threats.

IT experts fear that malware may be permanently embedded in the server structure. These concerns are not unfounded, because as the current situation report from the Federal Office for Information Security (bsi.bund.de) shows, the working methods of cybercriminals have become increasingly professional and use modern technologies to penetrate systems.

Effective measures to combat cyber attacks

The digital infrastructure is becoming increasingly vulnerable, especially in times when digitalization brings with it increasing attack surfaces. The report emphasizes that ransomware attacks on municipal IT service providers can also have devastating consequences, as the attack in October 2023 on 72 municipalities and 20,000 jobs impressively shows. The number of unreported ransomware incidents could even be higher than is officially known.

The investigation into the perpetrators and how they gained access to the police systems is currently ongoing. While the security authorities strive to provide clear information, it remains to be seen what technical and political consequences the incident will have. Despite Minister Pegel's provisional reassurance, the signs are critical, not least because of the pressure exerted by the opposition.

Nevertheless, the hope remains that the planned investigations and measures can ensure the security of police data and citizens. The procurement of new technology should be given priority, even if the time frame and costs are still unclear.
