Heat wave and thunderstorm: Northern Germany in weather chaos!
Today, August 15, 2025, the weather in the far north of Germany is a real summer topic! Over the next few days we can look forward to longer periods of sunshine followed by intermittent patches of clouds. The maximum temperatures reach between 22 degrees on the Halligen and up to 33 degrees in Helmstedt, as NDR reports.
But not everything stays happy. Local showers or even thunderstorms can also occur - especially from southern Lower Saxony to Western Pomerania. At the weekend it will be significantly cooler, with only 19 to a maximum of 27 degrees. Some people might think: “That’s pretty dizzy!”
The heat and its consequences
The high temperatures are particularly stressful for homeless people. In many northern German cities there are contact points and shelters that offer support. In Hamburg, for example, the Diakonie's midnight bus also runs during the day and distributes lockable drinking containers so that no one has to die of thirst.
In addition, the AWO points out that there is a lack of adequate heat protection measures for older people and low-income families. The need for good heat protection is obvious here, as physical stress caused by high temperatures can have serious consequences. And to counteract this, free sunscreen with SPF 50 is being handed out at sports facilities in Hamburg - a small but nice step!
A weather with challenges
The risk of forest fires is classified as high in Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which further exacerbates the situation. Spending time outdoors not only offers the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful summer days, but also requires maximum attention. At the same time, the DWD's heat warning for most parts of northern Germany was lifted on Thursday evening, giving people some breathing room.
But the days ahead could be turbulent. Heavy rain, squalls and hail are forecast for parts of Lower Saxony. However, there is a ray of hope for those who love the starry sky: the Perseid shooting star shower is active until August 24th and the nights in the north are largely cloud-free - perfect for romantic nights under the stars.
Overall, largely summery weather is expected again on Friday. Pack your picnic blankets and make yourself comfortable – summer is far from over!
