Dragon boats conquer Grabow: City festival delights with top events!
Last weekend, Grabow experienced an atmospheric festival that almost became a sporting spectacle. The 22nd dragon boat race took place on July 19, 2025 in the city's harbor basin and made the hearts of all participants and spectators beat faster. Under a bright blue sky and temperatures just under 30 degrees, Mayor Kathleen Bartels welcomed the athletes and guests to the start of this event.
The atmosphere at the city harbor was literally pulsating - a colorful mix of art stalls, culinary delights and entertainment for the little ones created a family atmosphere. The dance kids from SV 03 Ludwigslust/Grabow heated up the audience with their performances. Unfortunately only seven teams took part this year, which was fewer than last year. The participants also included the new team “Phoenix”, as well as the entertaining crew names “Lupigators” and “Simone and those in need of care”.
A festival for young and old
The teams set up pavilions at the harbor and offered a feast for all the senses. There were plenty of activities for the youngest guests: a bouncy castle, skill tasks and face painting not only made children's eyes shine. The parents of a primary school class also got involved and sold home-baked cakes to replenish their class budget. The dragon boat race was not only a sporting competition, but also an opportunity for shared experiences and social gatherings.
After the exciting races and the award ceremony, the festival moved to the market square. There, the brass music from Banzkow created a good atmosphere, taking the visitors into a happy evening. The entire event set came to a grand end at 8 p.m. with live music from “Prignitzfabrik”.
Tradition meets modernity
Dragon boat races are not only popular in Grabow, but have a long tradition and are now celebrated all over the world. They combine sport, cuisine and customs and have been a recognized UNESCO cultural heritage since 2009. Originating in China, these traditions have not only strengthened cultural identity but also fostered a sense of community. In 2025, the World Championships even took place in Brandenburg, in which over 150 nations took part - a real highlight for all dragon boat enthusiasts.
These events are a significant part of Chinese culture and have also spread worldwide. It is estimated that over 2 billion zongzi, the popular glutinous rice dumplings traditionally enjoyed during such festivals, were sold in 2023. Dragon boat racing has developed into one of our modern sports that creates a good mood far beyond national borders and has positive effects on health and communities.
To everyone who wants to experience the tradition and fun of water sports: remember the next dates and immerse yourself in a unique experience that combines sport, community and culture. Grabow shows how it's done - loudly and with a lot of enthusiasm!
