Fire drama in Severin: 200 bales of straw in flames – investigations underway!

A spectacular fire threw a farm in Severin, in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, into turmoil on Sunday morning. At 2 a.m. the fire broke out in a straw pile where a total of 200 bales of straw were stored. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by police, who are investigating suspected arson. The situation required the deployment of several volunteer fire departments from the area, including those from Goldenbow, Crivitz, Domsühl and Zölkow, to name just a few.

In total, almost 60 firefighters were deployed to fight the flames. Several fire engines were also on the way to supply water at the scene of the fire. The farmer himself supported the extinguishing work with a telescopic wheel loader, which he used to tear apart the straw pile. The extinguishing work took around six hours until the fire was finally under control. The dramatic scenes on site were documented in the regional news by NDR 1 Radio MV, among others.

Arsons in the focus of the police

Unfortunately, this incident is not the only fire that has caused a stir recently. A 21-year-old is on trial at the Schwerin regional court on twelve counts of arson. According to Agrarheute, the defendant, among other things, set fire to a residential building from which a family was only barely able to escape. These acts are classified as aggravated arson, and the defendant has largely admitted his actions. He could face a juvenile prison sentence of between 2.5 and 3.5 years once the verdict is handed down in late March or early April.

The defendant's motive for the arsons raises concerns. He explained that he wanted to “reduce the pressure” and enjoy the camaraderie and work in the fire department. Ironically, he also actively helped put out the fires he started himself.

Arson in Germany

The phenomenon of arson is not an isolated case. According to Statista, numerous cases were recorded by the police in Germany between 2014 and 2024, which underlines the relevance of the topic. These statistics and their publication clearly show that arson is a serious problem that should be addressed with prevention and education.

Whether in Severin or elsewhere, the challenges of dealing with arson remain. While the fire brigade and police are doing everything they can in scorching operations to put out the fire and bring those responsible to justice, the question remains: How can such mischief be prevented in the future?
