Port summer in Boizenburg is canceled in 2025 due to financial difficulties!

Hardly anyone would have thought that the popular “Harbour Summer” in Boizenburg would have to be canceled this year. How NDR reports, the event, which has traditionally taken place on August weekends in recent years, will not take place in 2025. The reason for this regrettable step is the city's strained budget situation.

The municipal supervisory authority approved the city of Boizenburg's budget in June, but only under the strict condition of saving 3.2 million euros by the end of the year. Mayor Rico Reichelt (Die Linke) was forced to impose a budget freeze in order to meet the financial requirements. By canceling the “Port Summer”, the city would like to save around 20,000 euros. The musical delight that the concert series has offered in recent years unfortunately has to be canceled this year.

School construction projects and budget situation

The fact that the financial situation in Boizenburg is tense is also clear from the large school construction projects. Work is underway on the primary school center and the “Rudolf Tarnow” regional school, but these investments put an enormous strain on the budget. Without a supplementary budget, the city could have been seriously unable to act Northern Courier emphasized. The city now has to save around 2.5 million euros every year in order to meet the requirements of financial supervision.

There are currently enormous additional costs of four million euros for the construction work on the primary school center and an additional two million euros for securing the Elbe slope. This financial burden has also brought political representatives to the fore. They are calling for more support from the federal and state governments in order to be able to overcome the pressing financial challenges. Lutz Heinrich from the CDU argues that cities and municipalities are under heavy strain and suggests introducing parking fees to generate additional income.

Financial situation of the municipalities

The challenges that Boizenburg faces are also reflected in the general situation of many municipalities. Loud städtetag.de A deficit of 6.4 billion euros is forecast for 2023 and an increase to almost 10 billion euros for 2024. This negative development has a serious impact on municipal budgets and makes necessary investments in important areas such as climate protection and infrastructure more difficult.

The causes are complex: increases in expenditure due to inflation, loss of income due to tax law changes and insufficient financing for refugees are just some of the factors that contribute to the decline in municipal income. The municipal associations are therefore demanding a larger share of community taxes in order to give cities and municipalities financial leeway for new tasks.

Despite all the adversities, Mayor Reichelt sees the future positively. The “Port Summer” will take place again next year when the budget is more stable and financial resources are flowing. In the hope that the situation will improve soon, the citizens and music lovers in Boizenburg have no choice but to look forward to the coming year.
