Schwerin is changing: 50 new applications for gender change!

More and more people in Schwerin are taking their right to self-determination seriously and are using the new options to change their gender entries. A look at the numbers shows that 24 declarations have already been submitted to the Schwerin registry office in 2023 to adjust the gender entry and first names. This has become a real breeze since the Self-Determination Act came into force on November 1, 2024. Under the law, which replaces the outdated 1980 Transsexual Act, trans, intersex and non-binary people can now have their details changed without a medical certificate.

As the annual balance sheet of the Schwerin registry office documents, a variety of changes were made in 2023: 10 people changed from male to female, 9 from female to male, 4 declared themselves as diverse and one person deleted their gender entry completely. The trend will continue in 2025. In the first half of the year, 25 changes were reported to the registry offices.

But what does that mean for those affected? According to the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection (BMJV), the right to sexual self-determination is part of human dignity and the free development of one's personality. The new law makes the process easier and provides an important legal basis for people who want to live their identity.

Easy access for everyone

To make a change, those affected simply have to contact the registry office with a personal declaration - the bureaucratic effort has been significantly reduced. Another plus point: the previous hurdles and requirements, such as the presentation of a medical certificate, are no longer necessary. The Self-Determination Act enables people to shape their identity in a respectful and dignified framework.

In a country where acceptance is still lacking in many places, this law is a significant step in the right direction. Society is changing and with it people's demands on their identity. It is time for the legal framework to take this into account.

The developments in Schwerin reflect a larger social change that is not only visible at the local level. Similar to access to educational opportunities, where courses are available for all age groups, from the youngest school children to adults, this also shows how important it is to create suitable framework conditions so that everyone can develop freely.

It looks similar in the rest of Germany. The Self-Determination Act could trigger a nationwide trend that promotes acceptance and equal treatment for all gender identities. The road is still long, but the direction is right - something is happening!
