Schwerin is fighting against domestic violence: 100,000 euros for support!
More and more people are affected by domestic violence, and this alarming phenomenon does not stop in our region. An increase in cases was recently reported in Schwerin - the intervention center was able to process a total of 1,116 cases in 2024. This number represents a significant increase in a state where registered cases climbed from 4,020 in 2020 to 5,005 in 2024. The head of the Schwerin intervention center, Michaela Kohnert, describes the worrying situation and the emotional and time pressure under which the police officers and counselors have to work. According to Nancy Schönenberg from the State Criminal Police Office (LKA), a further increase in cases is expected this year, which will further increase the relevance of intervention centers that are responsible for the Ludwigslust-Parchim and Northwest Mecklenburg districts. There are also other intervention centers in Neubrandenburg, Stralsund and Wolgast, which are often called in immediately after police operations to help those affected.
In order to counteract the increase in violence, the Ministry of Equality has provided 100,000 euros for additional staff positions in the intervention centers. This initiative is particularly aimed at re-offering counseling for children who often suffer unrecognized from the consequences of domestic violence. The forms of violence range from physical and sexual to psychological and economic violence, as described by the Istanbul Convention and underlined by the warnings of organizations such as the WEISSER RING, which offer personal contacts on site.
Support for those affected
Offers of help are essential to give those affected a perspective. The WEISSE RING not only provides contact persons, but also offers accompaniment to police, court and authority appointments. It is particularly important to provide support with emotional concerns and to provide help checks for initial psychotraumatological consultations and initial legal consultations. The organization also promotes the enforcement of the Violence Protection Act, which includes, among other things, bans on approaching people and prohibiting contact.
In addition, financial assistance is available to those affected, for example for moving, furnishing housing or to bridge emergencies that may arise as a result of separation from the perpetrator. These comprehensive offers of help are an important support for everyone who suffers from the consequences of domestic violence and help to stabilize the situation of those affected.
Insight into the legal framework
The HG decree from April 2022 sets out clear regulations for averting danger, including measures such as evictions and entry bans. For those affected, it is crucial that such regulations not only exist, but are also effectively implemented by the police and intervention agencies. Support and advice after such operations are essential to stabilize the victims and pave the way to a violence-free future.
It remains to be hoped that the combination of additional financial resources, more intensive advice and legal regulations will lead to noticeable relief for those affected. The growing number of intervention centers and the willingness of politicians to provide targeted support are steps in the right direction to counteract this painful issue and create a safe environment for everyone.
