Theater tent in Schwerin: Spectacular season starts with big highlights!
The Mecklenburg State Theater brings a breath of fresh air into the cultural landscape, because the new 2025/26 season promises a lot. A very special challenge lies ahead, as the Big House remains closed for the time being due to extensive construction work. But don't worry, theater lovers, the makers have taken precautions and built a theater tent in Schwerin's kitchen garden that can accommodate up to 500 spectators. This solution is not only pragmatic, it also creates a special flair during the performances. According to [ndr.de].
What can visitors expect in the coming year? The game plan is varied and offers something for every taste. The program includes the operetta “Die Fledermaus”, the musical “Sweeney Todd” and Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece “Hamlet”. The festivities in summer 2026 include the Castle Festival with the production of “The Threepenny Opera”. Another highlight: The young state theater starts its anniversary season with the song recital “It can’t stay like this forever”.
Theater tent – A creative solution
The construction of the theater tent began on March 17, 2025, and the technical setup was completed by the beginning of June 2025. The stage itself measures 11.5 x 11.5 meters and therefore corresponds to the portal width of the stage in the Big House. Barrier-free access and wheelchair spaces were also taken into account, making it easier for all theatergoers. The Mecklenburg State Orchestra will also be placed in front of the stage in the tent, similar to the orchestra pit in the Big House.
- Die Premiere der Operette “Die lustige Witwe” fand am 27. Juni 2025 statt.
- Von Juni bis August 2025 werden insgesamt 11 Vorstellungen der Operette angeboten.
- In der neuen Spielzeit sind insgesamt sechs Produktionen im Theaterzelt geplant, darunter ein Weihnachtsmärchen.
The location of the kitchen garden is also ideal – only about a 10-minute walk from the Big House. Visitors can easily travel by public transport, and parking options are also provided nearby. Once again, the theater tent offers a great atmosphere for the performances, which end by 10 p.m. at the latest, so even early risers don't go home disappointed.
A look into the future
The changes and plans for the next seasons are just as interesting. Joanna Lewicka will take over as the new director from the 2026/27 season, succeeding Nina Steinhilber. Lewicka brings valuable experience from her past positions in Warsaw and Szczecin and could bring fresh energy to the programming.
The theater in Parchim will also be celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, and the Fritz Reuter stage is planning a real treat with three premieres, including a Low German premiere of “Rup und Rünner”. The variety of programs at the Mecklenburg State Theater will certainly continue to be very popular.
There is a lot to look forward to for everyone interested in culture in the region! Whether it's the great classics or modern productions - now it's time to secure your tickets and look forward to an exciting year of theater!
